So, here is a question:
how often and for how long do you run your sprinklers right now?

5 minutes 3 times a day 3 days a week

watering is done late night to early AM

2 hour break between the 5 minute sessions for optimal soak in and minimal runoff
I would rather be Backpacking

I am not cheap. That's insulting. You don't know me or know my lifestyle.

First, I haven't visited a Starbucks (or any other coffee house for that matter) in years. I don't smoke and we try to restrict our eating out to 1-2 times a month.

I watch what I spend so I can retire in comfort.

I can't afford a $1000 right now for automatic sprinklers as I just bought a house and had to put 30k into making it livable an dit wiped out my savings.

$1,000, either you have an unusally large lot or I don't know where you are shopping but I want to stay away from there.

You spent $30K to make it liveable, as part of that decision you decided not to pay for automatic sprinklers.

Then you said

that would be where the city might want to spend a few bucks...
I know, let's write a grant proposal for installling automatic sprinklers for city residents!

So as a result of your decision to put off upgrading to an automatic sprinkler system, you want to petition the city (mine and everyone elses tax dollars) to pay for your luxury.

That's what I have a big problem with.
I would rather be Backpacking

Say what you want about the delivery, but Bill's point is still valid
There is no reason to peg taxpayers (read, my neighbors, friends, and family) for choices I make.

As for watering, I figure

Weds: 12:01am, Weds 11:50pm, Friday 12:01am, Friday 11:50pm, same on Sunday.

I am within the law, and still use the same amount of water

that is why this program is useless, and is really nothing more than a ploy to foster ill-will between neighbors.

Better to fix municipal water waste.

Meters would help. You don't waste what you have to pay for.

on average, do people end up spending more or less with meters?

Can you really get a SMALLER bill if you are metered, then with the flat rate?

Here's the story from The Bee...381 gallons per capita per day??...Is that per household, I assume??

That can't be....that's way high....isn't it ??? I doubt I use even close to half that...

Possible but not probable. I KNOW our household usage would change if we were metered. It's like eating -- you don't realize how much and how often unless it's monitored and reported.

That seems high. If I remember right the average Folsom household works out to 2.1 people per household and that would mean 800.1 gallons a day, which I assume includes landscaping, which would be about 292,037 gallons per year. That would mean each household is using almost as much as a family of five should use per the Water Forum Agreement back in 2000, which is 325,851 gallons or an acre foot of water.

http://www.waterforu...DF/GLOSSARY.PDF

Of course, I'd be curious if the per capita use was based on San Juan water users across the bridge that tend to have much larger yards than people in the newer homes on this side of the river, especially since 5400 of those users don't have meters yet on which to assess that kind of calculation.

It was a tongue in cheek comment... perhaps I should have added a biggrin.gif or a tongue.gif to make that more clear.

And is this hijacking the thread if I say the following?

Granted my understanding of poly si is dated (it's been awhile since college) but aren't tax payers *always* pegged for choices others make? This is the intersection of a bunch of individuals creating a society. We pay into a system and elect officals to dole it out. We may not directly benefit from some of what they/we pay for, for instance I don't have children but 50% of my taxes support our educational system.
Or for those of you who don't ever participate in public transportation - you still pay for those that do.

Brushing your teeth in the shower is a real waste of water- Using the sink and shutting it off while brushing would be far better in conserving water...

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

I remember a year or so there was a post/thread where many people said they take two to three showers a day in Folsom.
Knowing the past helps deciphering the future.

Yeah, but they're balanced out by the once-weekly bathers. Seriously, if I go for a run or to the gym in the evening, I need to take a shower afterwards even if I took one in the morning.

That article makes it sound like it is solely the city of Folsom's fault for the low lake level. We aren't the only ones that get our water supply from the lake, not to mention how much the BOR dumps out for flood control and other issues.

I'm all for stopping gutter-flooders and waste. I think much more water will be saved concentrating on those issues. Here's one that comes to mind. The corner of the Quail Chase Apartments at Blue Ravine and Riley. Maybe somebody can help them out locating the leak. It seems they have given up and their solution is to put an orange cone on the slimy sidewalk.
