The federal government did pay 2/3 or was it? 3/4 of the $$. The city of Folsom was told to pay the rest. So the city of Folsom was able to get some state funding assistance (here's where it gets sticky--) Which I think they must pay a portion of it back. The rest, Folsom did have to pay. I think from what I understand--the city of Folsom had to pay somewhere around the tune of $15 million dollars--plus the state grant and loan.

Perhaps the fenagling shortened the amount later on--but that was the last # I saw--back in the spring of last year.

Don't forget the city lobbyist $$$'s to get the feds to cough up a share.

2 things, how ya going to distinguish between El Dorado County to Placer county traffic vs. local Folsom bridge users.

& adding toll will just add congestion to crossing the bridge making it a less attractive route

I hate toll roads, unless they are voluntary shortcuts like in the LA area

Give the people that live in Folsom an electronic pass and let them go through a special lane. The vehicles that don't have one pays.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I thought the bridge was built largely with federal funds rather than city funding. I'm also of the impression that the primary pressure to build the bridge came from Folsom officials and businesses who wanted unnecessary traffic to bypass the downtown area.

Seems like Folsom got most of the benefit and very little of the cost, and taxpayers from every neighboring town paid equally as much.

The city of Folsom paid, or is paying, millions of dollars. Yes a lot of money came from the federal government but the tax payers in Folsom are paying millions too.

Here is the link.

Folsom Lake Crossing Costs

The total cost of Folsom's new bridge below the dam is about $132 million, including pre-construction, planning, engineering and real estate costs. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will pay approximately two-thirds of the cost. The City of Folsom's share is approximately $32 million, most of which is being provided from Sacramento County transportation sales tax Measure A funds. The Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency and the state Department of Water Resources are adding about $10 million.

sounds like Sacramento County actually pays the lion's share of Folsom's requirement. Do you have a breakdown showing exactly how much the City of Folsom's General Fund was used?

I would rather be Backpacking

Time will tell on traffic downtown when the bridge opens. There has been a tremendous amount of growth in the south area since the dam road closed and it is going to be hard comparing the situation as it was in 2001 to 2009.

Traffic sucks, retire and go shopping at 10am....

I wonder if they will open the bridge to foot traffic only for a while on opening day like they did on the new bridge. That would be nice and fun to walk across the new new bridge. We did that on opening day of the new bridge.

Msgt, you got your wish.

I read in the online city newsletter, they are having a public walk the bridge at the grand opening prior to opening it to vehicular traffic.

Wouldn't it be something if a whole bunch of us showed up with C_Vanderveen's T-shirts on?

It wasn't a wish... it was a wonder. My wife and I will attend if we can. It is a good thing they are doing it on a Saturday and not a weekday. Looks like it will be a much bigger celebration then when they opened the new bridge.

It's a crossing, not a bridge.

I don't want a yuppie puppy, mamby pamby, babyified, homogenized, stragitized, sissyfied, politicized crossing.

I want a big freaking audacious, bold, dauntless, dignified, gallant, he-man of a bridge and I want it to be named the Johnny Cash Memorial Bridge. I want a replica of his hat bronzed and mounted at each side of the bridge... and a big sign sayin
"Johnny Cash Memorial Bridge, named by the people for the people."

Right now they will put up a sign with the saying "
Folsom Lake Crossing, named by the council for the council and to the council.

And the only thing bronzed on each side of the bridge will be fist with it's middle finger sticking up and a plaque with this message... "to the people"....

submit that to your bridge naming contest
