Wow this topic went from a simple question of activities for a young child during the day to you all are idiots if you don't raise a child the same way we do. Keep in mind james1 is the person who also criticized parents who allow or encourage their kids to ride those dangerous, evil looking motorcycles.

It's one thing to offer ones methods, thoughts, advice but even better it be a two way street and listen, absorb and consider alternatives as well -- something james1 seems set against and noted many times in this thread.

FWIW I love the dedication seen on this topic to staying home with the kids (not so much Dr Laura's rant) and introducing them to arts, crafts, parks and part-time preschool where kids can be with other kids, be social and learn things outside home.

Soooooo....what preschools are you folks using?

It is a bit ridiculous that kids need some formal prep for kindergarten. It seems that kindergarten was supposed to be the prep for "real" school - 1st grade. That's no longer the case. Before you know it, kids are going to need to have pre-pre-school. It's really absurd. We have a daughter in kindergarten and even with a year of part time preschool, the first couple of months were a struggle for her (not behaviorally, but academically).

I have become very reluctant to post on this forum about parenting issues, because there always seems to be some bozo who has to criticize.

Honestly, I think most parents love their kids and are doing the best they can. There are more than one "right" way to raise kids. And when someone comes on this forum looking for some advice, then lets give them some advice but leave the judgement out of it.

And on another note, it looks like ChipShot was actually holding back when he was on this forum. Wow. Did I mention I'm really glad he's gone?
I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

I am currently trying to figure out what to do with my son for preschool. I'm on the waiting list for Joy of Children, but have yet to observe. This year I'm in the parent-participation preschool, and I'm looking for a change. I called Small Wonders, but not sure if I feel like driving over the bridge.

I don't think Montessori would work for my son, and I can't afford, and don't really want, Brighton or Phoenix.

What else is there? If you share your opinion, maybe describe the style - academic, developmental, montessori, etc.

I'd love to hear more details about your parent-participation experience. PM me if you'd prefer.

Check your local public school for preschool offerings. Our son is going to preschool at the same school he's going to be going to be attending until he goes to middle school. He might even have one or two of the same teachers that are with him now.

I live in EDH, its $22 a day and you can choose which and how many days. Not sure what the story is in Folsom or other communities, but its got to be in the same ballpark.

Whats it like? They focused on numbers for a while, now its a letter each week, they read stories, sing songs, do arts and crafts, spend about 20 minutes playing for recess in the playground if the weather is permitting, have different professions like firefighters, dentists and so forth come in. Smells a lot like kindergarten did when I was a kid a million years ago.

What cracked me up was that they taught him the pledge of allegiance and to sing "this land is your land, this land is my land" within about 2 weeks. It was worth the tuition just to get a video of my 3.5 year old singing "fwum cawifowna toowa new york isyand"

What I like about it is continuity in the location, the kids he's with, and I imagine the curriculum will line up pretty well as he enters kindergarten.

Aw hell, I've never posted a youtube video. But I guess I'll have to figure out how now!

Because like any parent, I hate sharing pictures and videos.

Sort of different topic in the same vein, while the moms and dads are here.

I'm interested in getting my 4 year old (just turned 4) into a "my gym" or "little gym" sort of thing. An hour or two once or twice a week, just to balance out his mental development with some physical.

I noted that a lot of these places go to great lengths to not mention their prices. So what the heck do they charge, is one better than another, etc?

I'd be coming down rte 50 from EDH, so something nearer to home depot than lowes would be a bit easier, especially if its only for an hour.

That was easier than I thought, other than making up a new youtube user account since my regular one has my real name in it, and we've had enough stalking/threatening regarding this thread.

Cruddy quality, I should have gone for a higher bitrate.
