QUOTE (JMH @ Jul 24 2009, 06:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My memory is bad today - well, actually many days lately, but wasn't there a big Beck's scandal sometime in the mid to late 90's? I'm thinking a teenage girl and older worker/manager were involved. They were neighbors and lived in EDH. There was legal trouble, maybe some jail time for someone .....

Does anyone remember this?

I just remember not wanting to purchase anything from there after the incident.

I recall that the male involved was a "Beck" family member. I don't recall the verdict or penalty.
I had the exact same reaction when the story came out and have never purchased from them, and intend to not do so in the future.

Because people have bad memories and Beck's Furniture needs to learn that, as a regional business, you can't treat customers this way and expect to get away with it.

http://badbecksfurniture.blogspot.com/

Appeals to the Better Business Bureau or your credit card company are fruitless. Customers' only recourse is to hit Beck's where it really hurts - in the pocketbook by dissuading future customers from shopping there.

If you've had a bad experience at Beck's, please visit the blog and add a comment. Or just click the link so we can build traffic to the site and it will move up the Google search listings. And tell all your friends and family who may be buying a house in the near-future about your horrible Beck's experience so they don't deal with these people.

So what are most of us doing now with a new 600$ voucher?
Are you sending them your ID's and money order?
Did anyone got any gift card from a new voucher program?

I've called again today Becks Customer Service and they were keep telling the story about customer responsibility to follow claimyourvisacard terms and conditions and that they have nothing to do with it.... Finally they hang on on me while the lady was really screaming.... ohmy.gif

I registered my new one last week and will be sending in my receipts for the month of Aug. later this week. The turnaround time is supposed to be 4-5 weeks max.

When I copied my driver's license, I blackened out the # on it. They just need it to verify your street address so people don't register more than one at a time. Anyone who thinks giving up your "routing #/account # and driver's license (with no # showing)" is asking for ID theft is beyond paranoid. So you never write anyone a check? You never show your ID to the guy at Safeway or Walmart? They could steel your ID too.

What are you doing to them to make them scream and hang up on you???? You're kidding right? I've called them myself twice just to see what they'd say (I didn't get one from them but pretended to be a "victim") and they were very cordial and told me to bring my old original voucher in for the new one. She/he (different people each time) couldn't have been more polite.

I was saying that I'd like different solution that a new voucher, which is potentially exposes me to an identity theft.

Looks like , rda, you will be the first to post here whether you've started receiving anything..

ID theft? How? By sending in a check? Don't you do that all month long? By sending a copy of your license? Don't you ever show that to anyone else when asked? I blocked out the # on it and was told that's fine. They just need to see the address, to make sure it matches that on your check/registration.......

I'll probably send in my first receipt for Aug. next weekend.

You are right about most things, however, in cases you've mentioned you know in general the business you are contacting.
In this case, as we already know, there is voucher whith myfreetravel company logo, and the company you are sending your details ISN"T myfreetravel (which ranked A in BBB) , but other company ....so it's all not seems really straight forward.
You have to understand , THEY ARE NOT MYFREETRAVEL COMPANY, and you are not working with company ranked or even registered in BBB.
Becks customer service emphasize the fact is a company with reputation is behind, but it's not.
Thats it...
Again since many people have concern now, maybe this is the way you have good chance to get any gift card back soon...

Be specific, give examples....And show your work.

And what would your suggestion be? Refund? A grocery cart full of $600.00 in groceries?

ID theft? How? By sending in a check?

How can ID theft happen by sending someone a check? Well, here's how. There are many software packages on the market that allow you to create and print your own checks. All someone would have to do is have all the information on your check (name, address, bank, routing #, and account # are all on there).......they could print up a bunch of checks with your account information. By the time you or your bank figure out something's going on, they will have gotten away with who knows how much of your money. That's the simple story. Here's a couple links to one of the more popular software packages....VersaCheck:

In case you're wondering, back before I started paying everything electronically, I used this software to create my checks as I needed them. All you have to purchase, in addition to the software, is blank check stock, which can also be found locally (Office Depot, etc), or online.

Paranoid? Maybe. I prefer to think of it as being proactive and not creating any unwarranted opportunity for a would-be scam artist to steal my identity.
I assume full responsibility for my actions, except the ones that are someone else's fault.

hahahaha, ok, cool. Ever heard of a signature card? Do you see the black helicopters hovering over your house? Of course you don't.

What a normal person does to protect their assets:

1. Monitor your bank accounts at least once a week.

2. Line by line verify every charge on your credit card statements.

3. Put a fraud alert on your credit history. You can do that yourself for nothing or pay Lifelock 10.00 @ month to do it for you.

4. Opt out of unsolicited credit card offers. Again, you can do this yourself for nothing or pay someone to do it for you.

Your checks, your credit card & #, your driver's license, your car license plate, etc. are everywhere and are being seen and touched by hundreds of people you don't know every week. That little girl at the McDonald's drive thru window who was double billing every ATM charge and throwing the extra cash in her pocket got away with it until someone noticed the double charge. laugh.gif

My last comment on this crazy thread until/if/when I get my debit cards:

When/if I get my first debit card, I'll post it here.

P.S. Do they serve refreshments at the Paranoid Convention?
