Two friends were down with it all last week... a third left work early today. Same symptoms, achy, super tired & higher than normal fevers (102 +/- range). It seems to come on pretty quickly but they got over it within a 5-7 day period. My one friend caught it from her grandson and just knew she was doomed to get it, from cuddling him while he was sick. Not one of them went in to get tested because they didn't think they could possibly have THAT virus.

As an aside... my rheumatologist canceled a trip back east a few weeks ago. He treats so many people with compromised immune systems & felt it wasn't worth the risk to his patients. That in itself speaks volumes to me about this flu. I think we're all going to just have to be uber careful come this fall, and still maintain some degree of not freaking out.

Normally the flu can't with stand the high heats of summer. It must have a moist environment to be able to go from person to person. That, and people have a lowered immune system due to their bodies trying to keep them warm in the winter months.

I've not ever heard of the flu in the summer. I wanted my son to go get tested, but he said he didn't think he had the flu. He thought he had eaten something bad. He had diarrhea the first day, but after that none. And he wasn't really feeling the energy to go to the doctor.

I think because people are not getting tested, the swine flu is under reported. It's now a serious out break in Britain. I think people will be getting this like wild fire this fall and winter.

I also think that our government started saying it couldn't be contained after it started hurting our economy, with people staying home more.
You know, what are a few hundred dead people when it comes to the economy?

Where did you get this info?

I haven't heard that.

Hi,
I got it off the California Dept of Public Health website. Also, if you google swine flu california, it pops up right away.
There is also a web site called Rhiza Flu trackers and that is where I saw it and then went to the California web site. It is verifiable, for sure.
Now that is very concerning, however, we do not know how long they had been sick. We have some problems here in California. May be we are too close to the border. YOU THINK!!!!!
I am pretty upset and worry about this constantly.

Lately there has been a flu or something like it going around. It lasts for three to four days with a lot of aching and weakness.
My son had it last weekend and mostly slept, took Tylenol and it pasted. Odd it being in the middle of summer.

I think it was swine flu, but he didn't go to the doctor and wasn't tested. What else could it be, having those symptoms in the middle of summer? He didn't have much congestion, as with a common cold.

Anybody else hear about, or get this?

There was a post a few days ago that stated she had the same thing but was tested and did not have swine flu. My understanding is that if you have flu in the middle of summer it is swine flu. I am glad your son is better and doing ok. How old is he? Is everyone washing their hands. It is hard with young kids.

What city do you work in, if it is ok to ask? Had they traveled? What age group?
Thanks, just trying to get some info.

Yes I know of a family from school who had a daughter with the illness. She was very ill for a while but is fine now. She is a Folsom resident.

How old is your friends daughter? what were her symptoms? Anybody else in family get it?
thanks for any info.

It is interesting with the UK, as they say their numbers are so much higher, because they test everyone, unlike the good old US of A. Now the WHO say they are not counting anymore. I guess it does not mean anything. I guess we are on our own. Also, would you get a vaccine that was not tested and just super tracked. I do not think so. Look at Baxters Pharma stock, Thru the roof. Sure they will be fine, will we?

No travel involved for any of them. And I work in Folsom. The first two (53 y.o. & 22 y.o.)that got sick never came in to work to share the love, so to speak. tongue.gif The third woman (36 y.o.) was only in for about an hour before she decided it wasn't such a good idea to be there & left. And they all have different work schedules so it's unlikely they passed it to eachother given the days they came down with it. Plus, several of us that are there more consistently, have not been affected at all so it's tough to figure out how/when/where. I do know the one friend (53 y.o.) got the direct hit from her grandson (13 y.o.).

I wish there was something I could do to relieve your worry Wreathlady! Maybe it would help to know that I'm one of those compromised immune system people and getting the flu would knock me out pretty good... however, I just get to be really smart about how much/whom I expose myself to. I work with the public almost daily and still, thankfully, have only had one (mild) cold back in March... but I got that from the emergency room!!!

Hope that helps!

August 10

That's the date school starts... I predict within a few weeks, swine flu will be everywhere. It's now recognized that schoolchildren are the major incubators/transmitters of flu, because they tend to have such poor hygiene (i.e., they cough all over each other and don't wash hands).

Without a doubt, it's going to be a rough fall. We'll have to see how things go, but it almost seems pointless to try to keep the kids home from school/activities/sports etc. You can't lock your family inside for months.

Wreathlady, I am nervous, too. I have almost resigned myself that we are all going to get this thing... just cross your fingers your body is strong enough; but when it's your time, it's your time. --Well, I can live with that for myself, but I can't bear the thought of my kids getting seriously sick, or worse.

You cannot "assume" you have/had H1N1. I had all the symptoms and my test came back negative! I think people will only add to the hysteria if they say they have/had the disease when it hasn't ever been confirmed by a medical professional.

I am right there with you. Myself, one thing, whatever, but my kids, grandkids, etc. that is almost unbearable to think of. I wish the schools would put in sanitizers, teach them hygiene, but the way California is the poor teachers can barely do their jobs, along with a pandemic.
Very Sad. I wish us all good luck and many prayers.

I totally ageee, however, some are not doing testing. Also, 40% are coming back negative when then are positive. Sometimes, there are different bugs that float around in the summer, of course not to this extent. So you are right, we should not guess for sure.
