I highly approve of your taking the precautions you are, but you may be in for a long vigil. So stay to course and be strong in your commitment.

Health authorities say that we may not see the end to this out break for some time to come and it may continue even into the spring months of 2010. Keep your kids off sugar of all kinds and give them vitamins....healthy kids can fight off infections better. Fruits and sugarless fruit juices are much better for them.

I think people's fears are justified and nobody should belittle anyone else for having them. I also feel that if the schools would have shut down for this year, due to the high increase in kids catching this from close contact with each other, many may still be alive today. It would have also given time for the vaccine to be perfected and enough of it made so everyone who wanted it could get it.

Remember back in the days before vaccines, pandemics used to be handled by quarantines until the virus died. But now everybody wants things to continue as usual because of a lost of revenue for the schools and businesses.

Are we so focused on money we forget about human lives? These are our babies that are dying, for crying out loud!

Maxine,
Are you serious? Are you advocating closing schools for an entire year because of this virus?

Yes and with more mis-leading non-information:

So far, 51 people in Sacramento County have been hospitalized with the H1N1 virus, and 15 have died

So did the 15 people that died croak from the virus or other medical conditions?

Keep spreading the the fear!

I just posted a link and you need to CHILLaXe. I am very much a skeptic in all the hysteria of this disease vs that throughout all these years, BUT having my own daughter go through this AND one of my very good friends (infectious disease specialist) sounding bigtime alarms has raised my eyebrows on this one.

What is my point? I just want parents to take this H1N1 seriously. This one is not hype or a joke.

Here are some facts if you forgot how to read:

Sacramento County has seen a 30 percent jump in the number of people hospitalized with the H1N1 flu virus in just one week, and the Sacramento Fire Department said they have seen double the number of respiratory illness calls.

"Our staff is literally working day and night right now and that requires overtime," Dr. Trochet said.

I find this a very insensitive remark.

FYI, about 1/3 of the children who have died had no underlying medical conditions.

Even for those who did have a medical condition, what's your point? Does a person with asthma, high blood pressure, or pregnancy "deserve" to die? It is not normal for young or middle-aged people to die from flu even if they do have a condition like asthma... can't you see why people find it alarming?

I understand your point, palango, but one has to wonder are all these extra calls due to the fear instilled by all the media. For example, how many of those extra respiratory illness calls received by the Sacramento Fire Department actually turned out to be nothing, but people are afraid and called out of an abundance of caution.

Dr. Trochet's staff is working overtime because people are hypervigilant because they are being reminded every single day about this flu; whereas with the regular flu they would just ride it out with chicken soup and over-the-counter remedies.

I will say the good part of this is if people actually stay home when they are sick, thereby not exposing their coworkers or, in the case of children, their schoolmates to whatever flu they actually have, H1N1 or not.

Does anyone know why kids, 10 & under, require 2 doses, 4 weeks apart to be considered effectively inoculated while everyone else 11 and older only needs one?

If the shot in the arm is dead viruses, why is the nasal spray "weakened" live virus?

How is the virus "weakened", yet not killed?

I really like to hear more about the true science behind things, but the media is horrible about informing the public with true science.

It sounds like you need to do 2 things:

1) watch last Sun episode of 60 minutes about rh vaccine
2) go to the CDC and flu.gov website where all your questions will be answered if you look hard enough.
3) go to flu.gov and ask/email an expert your specific question ( http://www.flu.gov/ask.html)

I agree that media has traditionally sells the extrordinary, but anyone that spends some time on LEGITIMATE medical sites can get 100% of their questions answered. There is abosultely no excuse, but laziness if you want to find out more before you make an informed decision for your kids and family.

I already got the shots, so my interest isn't to make a decision.

I find it offensive your implication I'm being lazy.

I've been to the CDC website and I just checked the flu.gov website and their FAQ's don't answer my questions. I have submitted my questions, and I'm awaiting a response, but I'm not holding my breath that i won't get some canned response that doesn't answer my questions and refers to me FAQs that don't answer my questions. I'll let you know if/when I get an answer.

Edit update: I got a canned response telling me about their flood of emails and that it may take a few days to get me a response. I expect another canned response in a few days.

A simple google (www.google.com) search will yield you the results for the questions you may have:

I read all 4 links and none of them answered my question as to WHY younger children need 2 doses. They just re-iterate what I already know is the recommendation, I want to know the why of the recommendation. What is magical about 10 years old?

Also, none of them address how the virus is "weakened". all they say is flu-mist is weakened virus, while the shots are dead viruses. I already know this. Tell me how they are weakened.

Everything I find is the same "sound bites", I don't want "sound bites" I want knowledge.

Another no brainer explanation that is clearly defined in the many articles, news reports and CDC (if one pays attention).

WHY???

Because: But they (CDC and the WHO) said more studies confirm that children under the age of 9 will need two doses to be fully protected.

Now I don't know about you, but if the studies by the extensive teams of CDC and the WHO researchers that are working night and day on this ever changing situation confirms the need for more dosage, I would take that as a legitimate answer.

Your next questions I anticipate will be what studies and where? You can go back and forth on this, but if you watch the 60 mintes piece coupled with the OVERWHELMING CDC website and the flu.gov website as well as Mayo Clinic, you will tend to believe that there is something legitimate about their "studies".

Then again, if you are highly suspicious of our Guvment, then go to the Canadian ministry of Health or the British Ministry of Health or the WHO's website and find out WHY??? I bet you, they will also give you (what you call is a soundbite answer of) the studies confirm.

You obviously don't understand the question WHY or how to answer it.
This isn't a "no brainer", in fact, I'm wanting the "brainer" answer, not the "no brainer" because they said so.

Just because studies show it to be true doesn't answer the question WHY it is true.

Do you understand that distinction?

Let's look at a simpler non-biological problem. Take a normal coin. If I flip it a 100 times, on average, 50% of the time it will come up heads, 50% of the time it will be tails. It doesn't matter how many times I perform the study, the results of the study do not explain why it is true, they only demonstrate it to be true. Only mathematics and probability explain the why.
So I accept the CDC's studies results that experimentation shows children should get 2 doses, what I want to know is WHY? what is the underlying scientific biological reason WHY?

As for my other question. How is the virus weakened? I've already been told over and over that the flu mist is weakened live viruses, I want to know HOW they are weakened.

Get it, got it, good!!!
