Escher was the guy Cloud9 posted.

Slashdot had a great article about Escher and Eliptic Curves, that led to this site where they fill in the blank in his "Prentententoonstelling":

This mathematical structure answers some questions about Escher's picture, such as: "what's in the blurry white hole in the middle?" By a five step process a wide variety of different pictures has been made, such as a straight picture, and a picture twisting the other way.

Great stuff! If nothing, check out the loop movie:

If you like Dali and de Chirico, you should also enjoy Magritte.

A cannon and 2 artichokes at 1:28 pm/am?

I see innocence in the form of an artist coming down from a hit of acid.

Yeah, seen him before. I dunno, I'm just not feeling it.

Here's a classic for all who care:

.. also quite famous:

Oh come now, that's nowhere near as radical an image as so many other artists. A hit of acid would produce much more creative imagery.

Am I the only one that sees the phallic references? I think that was coming down from a long weekend with a young french girl, not acid!

I like it because it reminds me of an old bachelor pad of mine. It was a tough neighborhood, but we had our cannon so the crack dealers all steered clear. I remember we would sit by the window with our artichokes and watch the train go by. We called it "The Old 1:28 Special" because every day, like clockwork, it would drive by at exactly 1:28. Of course, our clock was broken, so everything happened at exactly 1:28, but still, there's something comforting about having things you can rely on. And on a clear day we could see the sails of the clipper ships off on the horizon.

Oh yes, I suppose that even back then on some level we realized that the train was supposed to be death, the cannon was an obvious phallic symbol, and the artichokes were a clumsy and heavy-handed representation of rebirth. But it didn't matter, for we were young, and as a free as we'd ever be again.

*sigh*
