We are coming as fast as we can! Takes a while to get building permits, health permits, sign permits, license for this and a license for that, can you believe we started the process way back in October 2011?

Oh yeah, I think we can believe it! the people on this forum wait on the opening of restaurants with great eagerness and its not unusual to hear about it taking a long time to get the permit process resolved. Keep going! We're looking forward to it!

Hello

I just found this thread by searching for Dickey's Barbecue Pit, Folsom. I am the owner of the new restaurant opening at the old Steve's Pizza site on the front of Walmart. We knew about the demise of Steve's Pizza before signing the lease, and we know about the issues that businesses face today. Even so we are excited to be bringing Dickey's to Folsom. The company has been in existence since 1941 and is better known in it's home state of Texas. It is still run by Mr Dickey and his son, and is to date one of the more successful franchise companies with a low 3% failure rate. Dickey's is on target to open around 120 new locations in 2012.

As you might imagine the main menu items are slow cooked meats, pulled pork, brisket, ribs, sausages, chicken and turkey. We are shipping in a commercial smoker from Texas manufactured by Southern Pride, to slow cook our meats for 14 hours over night, providing the tenderness and flavor that BBQ fans love.

From this thread I can see that some of the folks in Folsom are jaded and somewhat cynical about the existing and failed restaurants in the town and predict an early demise for us. I do hope though, that there are those out there that will give us a chance - we are not doing this to bring mediocrity to Folsom, and we are certainly not doing it with one eye on failure.

It is our intention to offer a warm friendly family environment, with quality reasonably priced meals to those people who also love the taste and texture of smoked meats combined with sides of fried okra, mac 'n' cheese and baked potatoes.

Folsom needs businesses to prosper, and those businesses need the support of you, the people of this city. All I ask is that you give us a chance, for you might just be pleasantly surprised!

Best regards to all of you.

I'm looking forward to trying Dickey's, but I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the menu. The menu has Chicken Breasts, but when I think BBQ chicken, I think of drumsticks and thighs. And in this day & age, chicken wings.

And under ribs, it just says pork, I take it Beef ribs are not an option?
And are the pork ribs spares or babybacks or do you offer both?

When we first open we are required to adhere to the menu set by the corporate franchise (just like McDonalds).
I hear you about the beef ribs and chicken drumsticks, and the baby backs! After 90 days we are able to add other items to our menu and we do have some of your favorites in mind! It is not unheard of for new items to be added across all the stores in the country, but it is a decision made by Dickey's corporate when that happens. I hope you will come try what we do have on our menu and your suggestions are well received!

It seems the reviews on Dickeys tend to be so-so. Given that everyone wants an awesome BBQ place in Folsom, are you going to be able to bring the quality up to become a standout in the area?

I bet they'll be great and I am absolutely certain they'll be doing their best to please the community. They are a franchise, so let's see what they have to work with and then, like they said, what they do after their first phase. I can't wait! The baked potatoes seem like they could be a real winner too!

I hope that we will be able to bring what Dickey's is intended to be. A "move with the food" dining experience in a pleasant family environment. Dickey's is intended to cater for those who want to come and obtain their meal and pay at the time they receive it, find a table and sit down. It is not intended to be a full service restaurant, and we don't believe we should be compared to that kind of establishment. If you want to go for a higher price meal, with wine, have a waiter serve you and expect to spend a couple of hours there then please don't expect that at Dickey's. And you won't get the same size bill either!
Some people will love Dickey's and others will not. That is what makes the world go round right? :-)

To be honest I don't need to bring the quality up to anything because I haven't yet opened. I don't own or run any of the other Dickey's, I don't operate their smokers, prepare their menu or manage their staff. I will start with the highest quality that I can achieve and let the diners of Folsom be the judge - when we are open!

Every Dickey's restaurant is a franchise and therefore it is only as good as the people who run it. There are around 210 of them - can they all be bad? How is it that Dickey's is one of the fastest growing franchise chains in the country? One just opened on Laguna Blvd in Elk Grove last week, one is coming in Modesto, two in San Ramon, one in Jackson, one in Pleasant Hill....and although there were closures in Arizona in 2008 this is not the case in 2012. I believe the company would not experience such phenomenal growth if the food was so-so at all the locations. I am responsible for my restaurant and no one else's. And I am passionate about doing it right!

There are always bad reviews against restaurants, and there are usually just as many or more good ones for those that deserve it. I think you really have to find out for yourself if any restaurant will be the kind of place you want to visit. I have a favorite Thai restaurant that I go to which has rave reviews and reviews that slam it. I judge the place on my own experiences and I go back regularly.

I hope not to be judged by what others do, but by what I do. For that is fairer don't you think? :-)

Kind regards

Ray

I look forward to Dickey's opening. When I used fly American from Fresno to Dallas, Dickey's was always our go to spot. I've even carried Dickey's BBQ home from Dallas for my parents on a few occasions. it's been a few years (I don't travel out that way as much as I used to), but we always enjoyed the food.

Welcome to Folsom :cheer: :cheer:

I don't know if I'll be there opening day, but you're missing out on a customer tonight.
I'm going to TexasWest BBQ in Roseville to get my fix of pork spare ribs, beef spare ribs, and chicken wings.

I'll probably try Dickey's within a month of your opening day.

I think the real estate market will go up after April 24th in the communities around Wal Mart center - the sweet smokey scent of good BBQ in the air.

Ray, it sounds like you have the right attitude and plan for a successful restaurant.

:D: That's the plan. Of course I am sure you know that Walmart is upgrading to a superstore, Wisebuys is now there, and there is an air of optimism for the future. Although this location may not have been a success for other restaurant types before, we are feeling good about our concept and it's positioning in the market in Folsom. Pizza restaurants have a tough time grabbing market share, because they have competition from supermarkets and the successful Papa Murphy take 'n'bake. Hotdogs are a low profit high volume concept and you have to sell a hecka lot of them to pay the overheads!
I spoke to the owner of Elk Grove Dickey's last week and he has had an amazing opening week with people going there from Rancho Cordova and Folsom. We hope we can do the same and stick around for many years to come!

Best regards

I thought you folks might be interested in a photo of opening day at the Elk Grove Dickey's last week.. the lines continues throughout the week and it seems Elk Grove residents are coming out in droves. The line stretches all the way past Round Table Pizza..and no it's not due to slow service - just sheer demand. :D:
