KXTV just reported he was armed with an axe, which was found on the roof of Target. He was a transient from S. California.

Image 2 from Nixie appears to show the Axe Handle in his left hand as he's walking into the bank...

We might feel differently about this shooting if the officer missed the suspect and the bullet went through the door and into a baby in his crib inside the room.My first thought was "did they really have to shoot him, in order to apprehend him"? But once I read that a screaming family was barricaded in a bedroom, and he was in the vicinity of that room, I can't fault the police for firing on him. The family's safety had to be absolutely protected.
I don't have enough information to know how safe it was to shoot the suspect, I'm glad it turned out not to be horribly tragic, but I'm also not convinced the shooting was done safely or that it was required. He did try going through the door that was locked to the room the family was hiding in, and then went for another door when he was shot. Did the officer really know where the homeowners were when he fired? I seriously doubt it.

this update has details from the homeowners perspective. It really sounds like the guy had to have had a gun...wonder where it ended up?

I bet a kid from FMS finds a new toy in the next week or two while on the way to hang out in Target parking lot.
Entirely possible, considering the time of day that this took place; that some kid already did pick it up-before the coppers had a chance to go search.
Best scenario is for the coppers to blanket that entire walking distance housing area with a gazillion flyers asking parents to search kids rooms and report any unknown firearms found/ with amnesty attached.

Hallway, low light, you're out of breath, blaring radio constantly updating, lots of chatter, adrenaline rushing, your weapon in hand, reports that the perp is armed-rifle-pistol....? You don't know, your hand is a little shaky, sweating in your full uniform and vest, mind going a million miles a minute, children and family screaming in the background behind a locked bedroom door, can't see the perp, all of the sudden he's in front of you, desperate criminal with his back to you and you can't see his hands, he's trying to force a door open, Bang, Bang, Bang, it's over. Just imagine what the officer was going through. Now he has to deal with the fact that he killed somebody and they can't find the perps weapon, the worst nightmare of any law enforcement officer I am sure. Although I've never been a cop I have shot with them at the pistol range during quals. Let me tell you, these guys and gals (almost all) are very good with shot placement and trained very well. The officer would not have shot if he was not sure of his target and the backstop, going for center mass of course. Hope this helps you think about your "not being convinced or that it was required" a little more. I am sure if one were to ask the family of that home if they had any doubts they probably would not. FOLSOM (CBS13) – The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office has identified the man fatally shot after a bank robbery in Folsom on Tuesday.
Joseph Carmelo Riso, 32, was shot by a Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy after a foot pursuit led officers to a home near the bank in the 1300 block of School Street.
The coroner’s office lists Riso’s city of residence as La Quinta, in Riverside County.

Except that perp was not armed. And adult male resident of home says he and his children had to duck to avoid bullets.
And they were outside. On the other side of walls between them and the perp and the sheriff.
