I love your history tidbits.  Did you know there are some old telegraph poles amongst the trees in the same area?  If you look behind Mel's Diner along the river you can see a few.  They are probably from the old Natoma Water Company days, but the historical society has expressed no interest.

I can't take credit for the tidbits.  I read it in the article today.  I didn't think that building was that old.  I haven't noticed the telegraph poles.  I hope they keep them.

The dude was too fat to walk in on his own! I'm sorry but I don't think being fat is a disability because one could lose weight and likely be just fine. I've lost about 40 pounds over the last several years and would  never characterize my weight problem as a disability!I know there are people with low metabolism or other medical challenges that might increase their weight/body fat so I would characterize their struggle as a disability.

Unfortunately, the AMA has now added obesity as a disease. That means all the legal protections in the workplace will apply, as well as ADA rules. Not to mention insurance changes. What a nightmare.  I shudder to think of the FMLA abuses that will be coming down the pike as I am intimately familiar with certain abuses under the the current system. Sigh.

The two people I knew closely with severe disabilities would always get offended if I thought of them as disabled. They just were who they were, and adjusted their life accordingly. They certainly weren't looking for any special treatment.

The unfortunate thing is that it may be that they got this lawsuit in just before new laws came into practice which curbs unnecessary lawsuits or drive-bys.

I do agree this restaurant is a feather in Folsom's hat. I wish we could help this owner become compliant so that it could stay open. I believe one way to do so would be to voluntarily revoke their business license and then re-build. I too, am curious of the expanse of the necessary changes.

And Rosa Parks could have chosen a different bus.

Rosa Parks wasn't suing all the bus companies, nor going after busses she never rode on. Bad comparison.

I look at it a different way.  If you have a business that has been able to accommodate wheelchairs and suddenly you are confronted with a device of a different size or regulations that are constantly changing it's like operating with sand shifting below you.

I want to sue Kalini for being obese and blocking my view of the sun

Wow that was a dense statement. I was comparing the statement not the persons. Go back and read the statement that my quote was a reply to.

That may be true of some people with disabilities or really any person who fits into a specific grouping.

However, there are also people who relish shoving their differences in your face to force a confrontation, and there are people who have differences who believe that not enough is done to allow them to be full members of society and feel drastic changes in the way people behave will make them fuller citizens. Then there are the people in special groups who really do get forgotten, or fall through the cracks. They die of terribly unfortunate circumstances.

Somewhere along the way we just have to try to balance it out and keep life interesting.

Hooray!  Amphetamines for everyone!

I did read it, made no logical sense the first time, but don't worry, I won't call you dense for that.

"...there are people who have differences who believe that not enough is done to allow them to be full members of society and feel drastic changes in the way people behave will make them fuller citizens."

Then they would be wrong. America is the most accommodating and inclusive  country in the world. Try getting around Europe in a wheelchair. Or being a foreigner in any number of nationalistic European,Asian, African or Latin country.

Whether one self-identifies race, sex, disability, or ethnicity based "differences", the best way for them to be "fuller citizens" is to abandon the culture of victimhood.

Surely you jest.

Chances are, there wouldn't anyone willing to represent her if she had, and her home might just mysteriously burn down.

This is so wrong...I feel for the staff and a place that has been an institution in Folsom for a long time!

By the way, if anyone is interested in the aforementioned checklist, I looked it up for you:

Awww, my favorite fact nerd has done it again!! He found the missing information!!

This disclaimer on that checklist shows just how disorganized the ADA world really is :

informal guidance, and is neither a determination of your legal
rights or responsibilities under the Act, nor binding on any agency
with enforcement responsibility under the ADA."

If I ever met this Kalani guy I'm going to wheel his fat, crippled arse onto the light rail tracks.
