I'm not asking that anyone do anything for me. Just that I be allowed to deal with my own trash. That's all...

The flaw in that premise is that once it leaves your house, it's no longer your own trash; it's a societal problem. Anything each of us can do individually to limit the amount of garbage we contribute to the limited amount of landfill space is a good thing. The added benefit is the preservation of natural resources provided by recycling (trees for paper, petroleum for plastics, etc.).

Again, I don't consider one or two additional waste containers that big of an issue with all the problems we face in this city, state, country, and on this planet (and certainly not worth 4 pages of MyFolsom.com forum posts!).

Did anyone else read the article on the front page of the forum? Its no wonder this city is considered snobbish!

Lets fine people for their garbage cans that we imposed on them! Or wait, lets approve houses with almost no side yards, then impose large garbage cans on the people, then fine them when they have no place to put the cans! New revenue for the city!

I'm not a snob by any means but I support the ordinance. Residents who actually have no physical room to properly store their garbage cans can opt out of the 3 can system. Residents who could make room should. Peolpe who believe big brother is trying to tell them what to do should get a life.

These ordinances are in effect all over the state -- not in snobby areas. Modesto, for example, has had an ordinance for many years. As you know they're not exactly known as the 'high brow' valley town.

Small price to pay, IMHO, for keeping the neighborhoods looking nice.

Of all the places I've lived - Folsom was the only one (until recently) that did not have a recycling program - we've been behind the times.

Its amazing how many posts have been generated over trash cans, something I always took for granted but a lot of you folks are obviously very passionate about their usage and placement

Course I also find it amazing that there are folks who refuse to recycle - its not really that hard and if you think about it - about 80% (or more) of the trash you generate is recyclable materials (glass, cardboard, plastic ect)

In the words of Nike.... "JUST DO IT"

I do like the three can system but finding another place to put them is a different issue.

We simply are not running out of landfill space. It's just NOT TRUE. This is simply fear propaganda.

If it was true, it would be difficult and expensive to get rid of trash. Yet it is not. Even on the free market, trash is easily and cheaply disposed of. Furthermore, it can be used to generate power (methane emmissions) and can be covered up and used for other purposes when a landfill reaches capacity.

We have plenty of space for our trash.

The added benefit is the preservation of natural resources provided by recycling (trees for paper, petroleum for plastics, etc.).

But we have more forests than we did in 1920. Trees are grown to support the paper industry. Using paper CREATES more trees, because people grow them specifically to create paper out of them.

If you love trees, by all means use more paper, so more of them will be grown to support that need! smile.gif

I think the thing to is look at who picked the colors of the new cans..they kind of stand out. if you are ha hunter you know there are more kinds of camo out there for differnt kinds of woods and stull

we could have the city start of focus group or even hire a consultant to come up with camo scheems on how the folks that have no room in the back for all the cans to paint them like fences or bushes

worder if there is any rules abut painting, but again it might confuse the pickup driver as to which kind of can it was, or even for the ones who like to drive fast, miss the cans altogether.. but again maybe you could put a number on the top like they to police cars.

COOL.....

Looks like a collective voice from this forum got the "let's pass laws to tell our neighbor how to live" city council all fired up.

Someone please stand up at the City Council session and ask these BUSY BODIES to go buy a home in a community with an HOA so they can practice the game of "Tell your neighbor how to live like I do" in their own little neighborhood ecosystem. I’d it myself but won’t be in town.

Private property rights erode little by little.
- Boat storage
- RV's on the side yard
- House color
- Landscaping
- Basketball hoops
- TV dishes/antennas

What do all these have is common? We all have opinions about their use and visual appeal. This is an HOA function....not the city.

Next thing you know we’ll have to get a city ordinance to govern the size of you breast implant if your going to walk in the historic districtJ I bit silly, but so is this trash can idea.

IT CASE YOU SKIM READ….HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA…HOA

For those readers who need help with acronyms. HOA = Home Owners Association

Instead of complaining, why don't you volunteer at the various homes in desrepair or help construct a holder for the trash cans??? Did you ever think that maybe all of those trash cans are a burden for an elderly or disabled person to push? Also, most homes can't easily fit all of those trash cans on the side yard and I know my husband always took out the trash can for our single female neighbor just because it's such a pain in the arse.....There are so many people in our community who could use the help.......
Americans, don't just come in one color or race.

Not one complaint about disrepair, elderly, disabled or single female in my post.

Ever heard of looking beyond the trees to view the forest?

My point is this is not a city issue. If we aren't careful what we ask the city to legislate, we will wake up someday breaking the law just picking up the morning news paper.

I do realize freedom is something not everyone understands or values. Personal property rights of owners, an ordinance like this one being proposed, and an HOA all have their place. Step back and think about it replacing the word "trash cans" with something else and see how it translates into senseless governing.

You know what, we can do that, and you would be right...but the fact is, all we are talking about here is trash cans. So you lose
