have you been to the French Laundry? I hear that place is epic/legendary, very hard to get into (bookings months ahead) and that its about $200 per person

Its one place I dream of trying out someday

I totally envy you - how was it? what did they prepare that night? from what I've heard from friends who have been - there is no menu - you get whatever the chef is serving that night

An email from MyFolsom's Member...

[color=#0000FF]Hey Spicy,
I am not someone in disguise. I am no one. Simply a couch potato, 500+ pounds, live in my mother's basement, an independent thinker, and live to eat.
I have a lot of free time for the next few months... then my life will move on...

Nice try, but there's only one problem. No basements in town!

I've been to The Kitchen, and cannot recommend it enough. Never tried The French Laundry, though my in-laws have, and I think it compares to The Kitchen, in the respect that you don't pick your menu, it's all up to the chef. The French Laundry I believe is much more upscale, though, and the price reflects it. (The Kitchen-$125 per person, The French Laundry-$240 per person.)

Getting back to what this topic was originally about, here's my ratings:

Lucilles, Roseville: 5 (yes they have truly amazing BBQ)
Chicago Fire: 5 (we are so lucky to have such a good pizzeria in town!)
Bidwell St Bistro: 5+ (best upscale restaurant around IMO, and good prices for what you get!)
Mama Ann: 5
Ciros Pizza: 4+
Viscontis: 4 (yes I know service is iffy, but certain dishes are really good there)
My Brother Vinny's: 2
Gold Miner Cafe: 4
Red Robin: 3.5
Jack's Urban Eats: 4
Karens Bakery: 4+
Jennies Palace: 2
Taiko Sushi: 4
Kirala Sushi: 4
Prya Indian Restaurant: 3- (slipping lately)
Taj India: 4.5 (our new Indian food favorite!)
Dos Coyotes: 4
La Fiesta: 4.5
Sol Azteca: 4

Now before someone comments on my ratings, my ratings are based on type of restaurant - in other words I'm not saying Mama Ann's is just as good as Bidwell St Bistro. I'm saying Mama Anns is a top restaraunt in their own category (deli/catering).

I think Chez Panisse represents California more than French Laundry

chez panisse represents, to me, the bay area and the slow food movement. it seems more regional.

by the way, the meals at chez panisse can't hold a candle to french laundry (again, just my opinion).

The Kitchen is an awesome night out. We try to get in once every couple of months. It is well worth the price for both the food and entertainment. Nice wine list too.

Morton's is our favorite steak place, but Cattleman's on Hazel has good steaks too. I never see anything on the forums about Cattlemans. They have a salad that I like too. Super cold lettuce and fresh crunchy vegetables. Mmm

two different price points-two different style restaurants-if money is no object then french laundry is better -but for value i think chez panisse wins
