It's funny that you mention these two things in succession, because the iPhone HAS NO SEARCH FUNCTION!!!! ARRRRRGGGHHHH!!!!! smile.gif

(I know you were talking about the MacOS and then the iPhone, but still ironic.)

EXCELLENT POINT, I didn't notice that, but your right. I actually gave them feedback at apple.com that the iPhone would be so much better with a search function. I totally agree! I think we will see it in a future update with bulk text messaging as well I hope. You have to admit though an insane phone overall!

I wonder if PC's will even be around by that point? I think people will realize it by then that they have been left behind with a PC.

Carl I have used both Mac & PC you should try a New Mac and see for yourself, I think you will be surprised!

I love the Mac. I'm planning on getting one sometime around March. I just don't buy into the whole religious arguments between PC and Macs, but I do love the Mac commercials.

Agreed, I love mine and it's a fantastic piece of technology. It's just that there are some really glaring things they missed:

* MMS messages
* search function
* block text select
* copy and paste
* easier way to create calendar items

Just to name a few.

The funny part is I never owned a phone that did 10% of what the iPhone does but I still can find ways that I think it will be the better. I bet that if apple released the phone with the ability to do all of these things we would come up with other things it should do. I think we will see some updates soon that will address these requests. If you haven't done so already let apple know what you think, they actually listen.

dan,

I had a Palm Treo 650 and 700p previously, and it did practically everything I could think of (including of course those things I mentioned). The iPhone was really only superior to it in wow factor (screen, UI) and media playback.

Just curious I never owned one of those phones did they have any of these features?
How about skip ahead Voice mail playback & features like call back etc?
Texting where you could see the whole conversation
pictures, play slide show, zoom, etc
Features like weather stocks you tube, itunes?
Did it have an ipod?
How about the map features did it have all that?
I'm sure it surfed the web and did imap emails.
I know I listed a lot of things the iPhone does but I haven't seen another phone do any of those things. I knew a guy who had a Treo I believe, and he wanted to show me that his phone did similar things like my iPhone but it took him forever to get to what he wanted to show me, did you find that to be true with your other phones?

I thought I would add my two cents.

I am a PC guy who has never owned a Mac. However, I am also A+ certified who used to work for a big box store as a service technician and have had the pleasure on working on both PCs and Macs.

From a cost standpoint, if a PC breaks you can replace the component and you are up and running. Average is probably $100. If a Mac breaks, the replacement part is normally in the $1000 range. The original iMacs were the worst as they only had three parts - Main board, Video board, and CRT. If any of them died out of warranty, buy a whole new Mac because it will be cheaper than the parts.

I hate how any pre-packaged comptuer comes with software I don't need or want. I personally like to hand build my computers as I know what quality I'm using and I pick EXACTLY what software I put on it. (this is one thing I know I don't like about big company PCs, not sure how Mac works in this area)

I'm a gamer. Games are released on a PC much quicker than a Mac.

I've seen some people say Macs don't crash. Yea, I've seen way too many sad Mac faces to believe that statement. On a PC, I can boot to another device and diagnose the problem. On a Mac - toss in the restore disk, reformat the drive, and pray that it works.

I do agree with what someone else stated. If you like a Mac and it works for you, stick with it; if you like a PC and it works for you, stick with it. However the ad campaign with the Mac & PC guy... that just makes me believe that Mac people are pompus stuck-up misinformation elitists. I'm not saying they are, just the ad comes off that way to me.

That's interesting you have that stance I talked to my Tech guy that is currently certified for Macs & PC's and also owns and works on both. His exact words were every time I switch a customer over to Mac I never hear from them again, I like Microsoft because they keep me busy. I don't know if the new Macs are any different than the old ones but I have a friend named Rob who has a 6 year old Mac and he can't believe that he has never had any problems with it since he's owned it. Now I never owned a computer that I didn't have a problem with at least once a year, so to me that is impressive.

I'm going to the Apple store today or tomorrow, and I'm going to hit them up with your point and see what they say, I'm interested if the iMac has changed from it's original design. If maybe that was something they noticed too?

I think the commercials are just plain hilarious, yes they're saying I'm better than you but I look at it as illustrating a point. Have you seen the one with the security guard because Vista has so many security features that Apple is making fun of how many security features you have to approve, I think they're hilarious. If you haven't seen the security ad or the Computer Cart ad check it out, they're dam funny in my opinion. http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/

Apologies since I havn't read all of this tread, and probably won't, but watch out if your mac or ibook has a hardware problem. Mucho $$. PC's are easy to fix, and just because someone can't get windows doesn't mean they will get mac os.

Macs are fun since they run bash and you can mess around with widgets and stuff, but not worth the extra $$ at all.

Admit it, you bought that mac because you like the cool looking hardware, or you are part of the graphic artist crowd.

I know of a guy who went to mac and dumped his linux laptop, but it costs $$.

Sorry, that's not the case at all, I own a business and use my Mac mainly for business and personal use. I started the forum because I think my iMac is by far the best computer I have ever owned hands down! When you get a new mac they give you 3 months of free coverage for any problems, or phone tech help, etc. You can get the apple care protection plan which can be for an additional 1 year - 3years. If your worried about any problems get the protection plan and your covered.

Macs are actually more cost affective than Dell or HP, not extra $$ as I showed in several posts prior, and worth every $.

So I'm not part of the graphics crowd and yes it's amazing that they fit what takes a tower monitor external camera and speakers into what most people think is just a monitor but that is definitely not the selling point that got me to buy. I could list the reasons or better yet just read the posts, it clearly defines why many others including myself who have actually worked on a Mac love them.

If your reading this forum and don't know which way to go, take what you've read from this forum and do the smart thing and find out for yourself, go to an HP store ask to see their Best Deal on a computer in your price range and write down what it offers, and then ask why should I buy this and not a Mac? Then go to the apple store and compare what they showed you at HP and say what is your best deal in this price range, and compare the two computers, apples for apples (No Pun Intended) Ask each store some of the things that you've heard on this forum about viruses and how to avoid them, Vista or XP or Leopard for a Mac, and whether a PC or a Mac can meet your individual needs. I think if you go into it with an open mind you will find out for yourself whether a Mac or a PC is right for you!

For everyone that has a PC that has talked negatively about a Mac and hasn't used a Mac in the last year, maybe stop by the Arden Apple store and educate yourself on the topic before claiming that Macs suck, what will it hurt, hell it might make your stance on a PC stronger, I doubt it but at least you will know the right answer for yourself. I have recently owned and operated both and I'm sticking with my Mac, it's 100% the best fit for my personal and business needs, My bet is that a Mac will exceed the majority of the populations needs & wants as well, people just haven't found out for themselves yet.

Understood, but when you have a unit for 2+ years and the airport card doesn't work, good luck. You are better off buying a new mac.

GNU compiler? These are all cool things with mac but available for free with GNU license on different platforms. I have no idea if you read to recompile code from a mac to a pc anymore? Isn't it the same architecture nowdays?
