Most of you know my real passion lies with local politics. Eradicating political correctness and pointing out double standards is something I also enjoy doing.

Local politics is still open:
http://www.tomatopag...hp?showforum=40

My complaint has been with the national politics, red v. blue, nazi v. commie b.s that has plagued this forum, and the majority of reported posts, for months! The Obama election certainly brought this ugly side of the forum to the top, but it got old very quickly. Personally, I think it simply reflects the dipole nature of recent national politics, but sadly it brings down the entire community to a bickering hate-fest. Again, I'm glad to see national politics gone, and hopefully this forum can continue to focus on local and regional issues like why the city sells land on no-bid contracts wink.gif

Schulz died in 2000. The strips have been reruns ever since.

There was a great biography of Charles Schulz published a few years ago, highly recommended. It started out authorized and became unauthorized once the family whitewash started to wear thin. The author takes some pains to link individual strips to the goings-on in Schulz's life at the time, especially his family life.

Peppermint Patty and Marcie have sort of been adopted by the lgbt crowd but that was not the intent of Schulz. I mean, they're six-year-olds. Both characters have a crush on Charlie Brown, in fact, though neither are able to penetrate his inherent loser-ness as he pines for the girl he can't bear to approach.

OMG--I was actually joking about all that stuff....

This thread is all over the place.

I want to add a comment to the mix. Some have said this forum is here so that people can discuss Folsom. If that is true, fine, but that isn't what I see at all. That is just one piece of it. What I see is a forum that is "by" and "for" Folsomites, but not exclusively "of" Folsom. Those who don't want to see politics or religion discussed don't mind talking about movies, TV shows, celebrities, Christmas, household tips, jokes, professional sports, and so on - none of which have anything directly to do with Folsom. The "purest" Folsom-related thread is the "Folsom General Discussion", plus the neighborhood forums. Those are the ones that best serve the intent.

So it's not accurate to say that politics (except local politics) should be banned because the topics have nothing to do with Folsom. Otherwise, you would also want to ban all the other stuff as well.

Core values, most often expressed in politics and religion, are not what some people think Folsomites should be discussing on this forum. That is fine, as long as that reason is the one given, and not the excuse of "the topics have nothing to do with Folsom". I think the reason that core values are a problem is that we become vulnerable when we open up and reveal our inner selves. From vulnerability comes defensiveness, and then come arguments and attacks, when someone feels that his or her core self has been assaulted. The resulting personal attacks are one big reason why the moderator shut down the forum. (Along with some people making too many random posts, not following the rules, etc.)

The challenge with political discussion is to keep things light enough to prevent that from happening. But if you keep things too superficial, then political discussion is pointless.

I am getting the vibe that any discussion topic, even if non-Folsom-related, is fair game, as long as no one's feelings can potentially get hurt. Which makes politics and religion dangerous to include. Whereas debating a movie's merits is not in the same league.

Local politics present an interesting dilemma, because one the one hand, it's politics, but on the other hand, it's 100% relevant to Folsom.

It's not the possibility of one's feelings getting hurt that is the problem.

It's the nastiness, the vitriol that's spewed by posters and the attacks that are problematic.

It's not that people need to toughen up, develop a thicker skin or just avoid the politics section if they don't like it. It's that civil discussion is to be expected and a lot of people just don't seem to be able to commit to that. It has nothing to do with one's political leaning, no matter how many times certain people want to use that excuse. It's because people have too often been rude, mean and jerky - regardless of what their personal beliefs or thoughts may be - that the politics section is gone.

Civil discussion, people.

ad nauseum, ad nauseum, ad nauseum...
