I've never understood why these victims' families have fundraisers for funeral/burial when there's a state program to pay for all expenses of the deceased victim. Seems like some are double-dipping. The victims and/or families are notified immediately of that program and other resources by the law enforcement agency involved.

According to the response I received from Powerhouse, "Thanks but because marijuana was involved they are not eligible."

Thanks for following up on that, aztransplant.

I looked at the application Terry posted and there is this question about the victim. I wonder if the disqualification didn't have more to do with Mr. Leon's previous felony conviction.

"From the date of the crime to the present, has the victim been in prison, on probation, or on parole because of a felony?"

The guy should have been behind bars, but instead got into more trouble and got himself killed. Why should we help pay for his funeral when he was up to NO GOOD!?

That was my first thought. Keep in mind that a funeral is not for the dead, but for the living.

It may still be worthwhile to apply and let the Program determine whether or not it qualifies. Seems to me there would be some review of the circumstances - petty theft vs. homicide? Not sure that makes the victim fully contributory to the events.

Powerhouse knows about this program for victims, followed application process, answered questions honestly and as a result was declined. The funeral is today, from what I understand.

Wasn't he killed in a drug deal gone bad? I think that definitely means drugs were involved. I think even if they didn't answer honestly (lied about the drugs) on the application, the request would have been denied, because it's pretty well known how he was killed.

Hopefully the family found a way to make do with the $5,000. I'm pretty sure my father-in-laws funeral was under that amount, so it can be done.

What $5000? Was this much raised through the car wash and other donations? Wow.

I've always wondered about the 'drug deal gone wrong' term. I always wonder just what went wrong. In this case, according to some witness accounts, he stole the killer's backpack which contained the weed he was selling.

I am referring to the state program that Terry recommended. I think it was you who posted saying that they wanted $6,000, hence the fundraisers. I haven't seen anything about how much they earned.

Correct, stacycam, except further posts stated that they are not eligible for the up-to-$5,000 state program/assistance because marijuana was involved. So, apparently, they needed to raise all $6,000 (in order to have a $6,000 funeral).
