To be fair to tulip, there hasn't been a real train on those tracks for over 30 years. It's a reasonable expectation that it might stay that way. On the other hand, the comment about Harleys is spot on. It sure would be nice if we could get all the illegal ones off the road. They are an annoyance every day and night.

Isn't this akin to those folks who move next to an airport and them complain about the noise and try to get the airport shut down? Did you not notice the tracks?

The Skagit is powered by a GMC MUFFLERED 6 cylinder engine. And be serious, those UNMUFFLERED Harley riders make much more noise and FAR MORE OFTEN than the mostly weekend excursion runs, which by my count would be a total of FOUR passes per weekend past your house BY THE RAILROAD TRACKS.

I think for the most part I am pro rail and bike sharing trails, but I think it unfair to discount someone's concern about noise on a seldom used rail track over the weekends. Most people are used to the quiet in that neighborhood and being woken up on Saturday mornings when accustomed to the rail line being retired is ( I think) an unfair expectation.

To be honest I wasn't even thinking about the engine or horn when I thought about the noise. I was thinking about that shrilly metal scraping sound that the tracks and wheels make. It is chalkboard and nails irritating. BUT, when you do add the horn and the engine and the cross arms beeping, it becomes an offensive cacophony bombarding the quiet of an early Saturday morning that only benefits the 20 or so riders that would be on the rail.

However, if noise reduction was implemented by using alternative methods rather than crossing arms and beepers (within a generalized area rather than against a housing community wall), and the rails are maintained well enough that the squeaky wheel is well greased: then I imagine this may not be such a hardship.

here's why it never gets enforced:

2130.5
(b) Measurements shall not be made within 200 feet of any intersection controlled by an official traffic control device, or within 200 feet of the beginning or end of any grade in excess of plus or minus 1 percent. Measurements shall be made when it is reasonable to assume that the vehicle flow is at a constant rate of speed, and measurement shall not be made under congested traffic conditions which require noticeable acceleration or deceleration.

Where are loud motorcycles most obnoxious? Right, within 200 ft of an intersection or a hill. And try finding a road with a grade less than 1%.

This is why the state motor vehicle noise law is never enforced (apparently the motorcycle lobby was strong enough to ensure that it was a toothless law), much to the consternation of those of us who live near popular motorcycle routes.

When the state legislature last went down the trail of aftermarket bike muffler regulation, it was going to be a law requiring smog tests every other year. The bikes would be required to have their stock mufflers. It was going to apply to bikes up to eight years old, which would have been a disaster for bike owners. Almost no factory muffler survives that long. People like replacing mufflers, and often the original is gone because it was sawed off to install the aftermarket one, or because that's what gets smashed when the bike falls over. Without those inspections, anyone replaces it with an aftermarket pipe because it's cheaper, louder, and cooler. Replacement stock mufflers are rarer than hens' teeth. This is even more true of sport bikes, which are more likely to get wrecked and more likely to get ruined when wrecked. The reaction of bikers was bad and the various bike lobbies got it pared down to the point where it was just another noise law, making no difference. I think it might have gone through if it were phased in rather than retroactive, but it annihilated too much wealth of too vocal a minority as it was written.

If it makes any difference I have had my KTM's noise level checked at a tech inspection for a sanctioned event. So, it does occur at times. Myself and 499 others had to pass to be able to ride.

I'm sorry, I must have missed a post, or perhaps it has been deleted? What does boycotting EDH because of their leaders have to do with a decision in Folsom to allow co-share of a trail for rail and bikes?

Seriously, did I miss something?
