Yes they do, so what's the point of it here?  Avoiding the ten bucks, maybe.  Your pejoratively-decribed "ADA ramp" is actually a nice little walking trail with some scenic overlooks, which is nice, I'm sure people will enjoy it.  Like I said, I don't object to it.  But it's not really a path to the boat ramp, except in a roundabout way.  I suppose with a paddleboard or a kayak the steps would be all right, with a canoe on your shoulders it would be a real pain.

The plan shows a kayak/bike rack, that sounds like fun.  Anyone know where I can get a kayak/bike?

When did ADA ramp become a pejorative description?  It is an ADA ramp.  The proponents have made a big point out of this aspect of the design.  There are also stairs going in.  Not trying to be pejorative at all.  Try not to read in bias when there is none.

I am all for better access to the water, and giving residents and visitors alike a better view from the south side of Lake Natoma.

It will be nice to be able to have lunch or dinner in the historic district and then stroll down and watch the world go by.

I think it will enhance the visitor experience and visitors (tourists) are becoming more and more important to the survival of the district businesses and to the city coffers.

ADA ramps became pejoratively described when "reasonable accommodation" became at any cost, in any place, on threat of lawsuit. The costs are far outweighing the benefits.

For example, the 100 million dollar hiway 50 refit. If you figure it out on a cost basis, you could hire a car and driver to transport people in a wheelchair from one side of 50 to the other for over 30 years for much less than it cost to rebuild the over crossings.

On ARC, they tore out all the existing ADA ramps on the corners, and installed fancy new ramps with less gradient on them. The freaking street itself is steeper than ADA compliance, so how many of our tax dollars were completely wasted there? How much money are the cities/state losing every year due to business closings because of ADA compliance issues?  Have a barn and want to casually board some friends horses? Better have ADA access. It's not just costs to existing business, it's also all the businesses that are never started.

It's a worthy goal to attempt to help those unfortunate enough to need a little help. The execution absolutely blows, and the costs should have some limit.

If you read the proposal, it is obvious this was planned primarily as an ADA ramp. It is being sold as something else.

I see it the other way around.  The ADA compliance is being used as a means to get grants to complete projects now that redevelopment money has gone away. I think they will be doing the same for the Central Folsom project.

I don't mind better access.   When I heard waterfront access I was thinking of something different, but I do think it will help the Historic District businesses.  I  think it might create more parking issues, especially for Q'bole and Lake Natoma Inn.

My concern is the illegal nighttime use and the loss of natural setting.  There are river otters that live in that area (and don't have any other similar habitat on the lake) that are going to lose their home and that is another little loss for us all.  I also like the natural dirt path and think its important people have access to natural trails.  There is currently a bike trail that I believe provides ADA access from the lid to this same area, which is an okay area, but not that great.  There is nothing much down there to do once you get there, other than actually walk the trail.  This will make it easier to get down, certainly, and help clean up a lot of the erosion caused by the last set of wood stairs.  However, Lake Natoma is a state park and meant to be closed at night.  This will probably encourage more people to head on down there with some beers and smokes after dark into an unpatrolled area.  Not sure I like that idea.  May mean more litter, more graffiti, more crime.

I am not sure how tourists are supposed to know about it and why they would want to go down there.  Seems like they could see the same and even better views by walking on bridge loop, which actually has seating areas for enjoying the view.

4thgen, you bring up some good points.  I knew we had otters, but didn't realize that section is their habitat.

Noticed that someone allowed parking for a fee on the fields at Theodore Judah for whatever event was going on at "Rodeo Park" with 100.5.

There are now muddy tire tracks in the field where the cars went in and out the gate, trash in the field, and the gate was left wide open.

Not a very nice way to take care of public property.  Not to mention the overwatering on the field and kindergarten area EVERY SINGLE SUMMER that water the sidewalks and asphalt as much as the grass, which in turn grow a nice crop of weeds on the sidewalk for residents to enjoy.  Calls go ignored or are met with they don't have the manpower to take care of the situation.

Rant over.

I dont get how you get handicapped access to a river.

are they building a ramp out to the water?

Are they going to keep the water in that area high enough year round to justify a handicapped ramp?

(the things that make you scream where's the sense!)

Are you asking a serious question or being facetious?  No offense, but sometimes it's hard to tell with the written word.

The access part of this is merely to trails, not rolling people into the river... unless perhaps they are in kayak bikes (that's for Darth Lefty :)

Does anybody know what happened last night on East Bidwell St.?

It looks like someone had trouble keeping their vehicle on the street.  There's a broken lamppost on one side of the street where the check cashing place is and then someone drove over the landscaping and curb and took out some posts of the overhang on Handley's.  There's yellow caution tape everywhere.

My friend rents a house near there and she said there was a terrible accident with a car that crashed into a store so that is probably the remnants from the accident last night.

Drunk driver crashed into Handy's and the sports bar next to it @ 3am. Nothing good ever happens after midnight, don't people get that yet?

Thanks mac_convert & nomad.  It must have been bad.  I was trying to figure out if one car did all that damage or more than one because of the distance between the light post and Handley's overhang.  The porch awning is drooping so there was definitely structural damage.

Hope there were no injuries and Handley's gets repaired soon.
