I just have one simple question: "Why are these people shooting at the helicopters that have come to rescue them?"

The same reason South Central Los Angeles burned up their own neighborhoods after the Rodney King verdict.
I assume full responsibility for my actions, except the ones that are someone else's fault.

Have they always been crazy, or is it the high-stress that causes them to do these crazy things? I also heard that a man shot his sister over ice... yes... ice.

I too didn't think this hurricane was going to do much until it hit. Last year Florida got hit by 3 hurricanes and the media treated it like each one was going to wipe out the state. When Katrina made its way to NO, I was like "Bah. Whatever." Truth is, the media over-hypes.

The media cries wolf every time, trying to sensationalize everything. Now it really happens, people don't take it seriously, and now this is the result.

I'm not saying these people should have gotten the heck out. Lord knows most had the opportunity. I just think a lot of people probably didn't really take it seriously.

No, that was a riot over a miscarriage of justice. People riot and destroy things, wherever they happen to be. People riot when their school wins a championship, or when they lose, it's happened at universities around the country, and in cities around the world. People riot over jobs, racism, to protest, and to celebrate.

This is an entirely different thing.

Who knows why these shots were fired? We don't know who 'these people' are. Was it one person? Dozens? Was he/she a gang member? Insane? Angry that rescuers passed him/her by? Trying to get someone's attention?

New Orleans, for it's modern history, has always been poor and desperate. A disaster that leaves you with no food, clean water, or shelter can surely bring out the worst in people.

So, yes, some have always been crazy and yes, the high-stress can cause people to do crazy things. Can you think of anything more stressful?

How long before the riots begin? I don't think it will be long.

Riots are next. Then, people will be jumping off the Astrodome, killing themselves.... wait... already happened.

Does the general populace of gang members have something in for helicopters? Are they hateful toward rescuers? Seems like a stretch.

Tell this to the people affected by last year's hurricanes who are still trying to rebuild near Pensacola. Even as this hurricane season started... people along the Alabama and Florida coasts did not recover from the destruction. After these storms pass through... the rebuilding process takes months if not several years. We just do not follow up on these stories. I invite you to take a trip down to the region affected by last years storms... and then tell me that nothing really happened when these storms went through.

If these people don't want help.....? Very sad for those who aren't nuts.

"We have suspended operations until they gain control of the Superdome," said Richard Zeuschlag, head of Acadian Ambulance, which was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the building.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesan, spokesman at the city emergency operations center: "At every one of [the hospitals], there are reports that as the helicopters come in people are shooting at them. There are people just taking potshots at police and at helicopters, telling them, 'You better come get my family.'"

It's sad for the helpless children and babies whose parents chose to keep them in the path of disaster.

Looks like it's getting worse...

New Orleans in Anarchy With Fights, Rapes

By ALLEN G. BREED, Associated Press Writer 58 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans descended into anarchy Thursday as corpses lay abandoned in street medians, fights and fires broke out, cops turned in their badges and the governor declared war on looters who have made the city a menacing landscape of disorder and fear.

"They have M-16s and they're locked and loaded," Gov. Kathleen Blanco said of 300 National Guard troops who landed in New Orleans fresh from duty in
Iraq. "These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will."
