FCUSD actually does CSR at K level. It's just half the time. State law doesn't require parity, except within a district. The rules are that districts that do CSR must do 1st grade first, 2nd grade next, then either 3rd or K.

My friend told me that both her district (Campbell -- serving Campbell and parts of Santa Clara) and Cupertino offer full-day kindergarten. She named a couple of other districts, too, but I don't remember the names.

Tessieca, I don't know what you mean that Folsom offers class-size reduction in kindergarten. I know two parents with children currently in Natoma Station Elementary School (one in afternoon and one in slip session), and they both say there is no class size reduction and the classes are over 30 students.

It's the two-teacher model. The teacher/student ratio is reduced for half the time, while the size of the overall class stays the same. It is one of the methods that districts can use for CSR, under CA rules.

Folsom Blondie - Any idea where the Foothill Christian Academy is looking to locate here in Folsom? What site/building?

Oh, okay Tessieca. I know you are right -- because the parents did tell me that there is another teacher in the classroom (who is not teaching).

In my opinion, a class of 32 students with 2 teachers is NOT the same as a class of 16 students with one teacher. Many experts (including the NAEYC) are saying that total class size matters, not just the student-teacher ratio.

Still... I guess it's better than 32 students with one teacher.

Regarding the proposed Folsom Cordova Charter School program, the public discussion at the school board meeting has been postponed. Interested parents should attend the April 15th board meeting at Mills Middle School.

forumreader - are you considering a run this fall? As "up" as you are on most school issues, you may want to consider it. I know we need another family-friendly voice on the Board.

That is not correct. There are strict legal timelines for considering submitted charter proposals. The board has to consider it this Thursday.

Wow. Thanks for the corrected information.

Gretchen Hinerman called me and a few other parents yesterday, and asked us to attend the meeting on 4/15.

I will pass the word along.

Melloguy:
Thanks for the plug, but no, I'm not considering running. (What about you?!)

I do agree with you that we need informed and strongly family-oriented voices on the board. Teresa Stanley and Ed Short need more company.

Forumreader and others: I hope I didn't mess anyone up. The consideration of the home school charter petition will be on April 15 at Mills Middle School, 6:00 p.m.

When I called I asked if it had been "delayed," and the answer was "no" because of legal timelines. What I didn't realize is that it was never set for tomorrow in the first place. My bad! thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

Very good news for parents looking for home-based learning alternatives within the public education system......The Folsom Cordova Charter School proposal was unanimously approved by the Board last Thursday!

Registration material for the 2004-2005 year will be available on Thursday at the District Office (125 East Bidwell).

For more information about the program:

http://www.fcsud.k12.ca.us/charterweb

or call: Gretchen Hinerman, 355-1111, ext. 123

Also, there is an opportunity to meet the Charter Director and the Development Team Members TOMORROW (May 11th) from 6:30-7:30 pm at Toys That Teach (In the Nimbus Winery, Hwy 50 & Hazel).

At least 50 students are needed to enroll in order for the program to go forward next year. So, please pass the word along to other parents.
