While I haven't been back to Aloha Sushi for a few years, it wasn't because their sushi is "low grade". I will agree that it isn't the type of restaurant I would spend my money at.
Many Americans like the rolls, and I do enjoy a roll every now and then. However, my parents and I were at another sushi restaurant this past weekend and had the best sushi in the Sac area again.
They brought out a live scallop for us to show it was fresh when the cut it (the woman sitting next to us freaked out when she saw it move when the chef touched it). They made me a special dish using jelly fish along with the fish that I ordered, and they make a dish that my parents haven't had for over 30 years.
Also their cooked food is better than other Japanese restaurants we've been to.
But as you have stated Spicy, we each have our own prefrences. I don't know many hakujin that would eat something that was killed right in front of them, just like chances of finding me in a sushi restaurant like Aloha, Taiko, and the Mikunis chains (including Taro) are slim.
