This just proves the sheer incompetence of the local management to keep the place CLEAN and under control.
I usually tip 20 percent or more, and I'm forgiving to a fault when waited on. Sometimes I find myself dishing out 20 percent even when service sucks! As I find myself making excuses as to why the experience didn't live up to my expectations. Maybe it was the cooks fault, maybe it was other issues, etc...
Let us know where you work mid-town so I can avoid the place, I'm sure you're a real treasure of a server, that'd I'd have to make a lot of excuses for...
As for Malabar "Dude" although their financial future does not impact mine, I hope they make it along with every other non-chain locally run restaurant in this "smallish town". It is about time that Folsom had something to offer for a night out besides Chili's, Red Robin and BJ's.
Buzz little hornets buzz, but I am done with this post!

Just let me say in response to "foodserver" that I NEVER want to see ANY business or, especially, a restaurant, go UNDER!! My "fellow foodies" who know me realize my true appreciation for good food and PEOPLE -- whether they are serving me or dining or drinking with me.
I was at Malabar's grand opening and have had many meals and beverages there, and also, have several friends who are servers working there. The last thing I would like to see is them losing their jobs. Also, I might mention in response to your aforementioned critisisms, I do NOT support ANY chain restaurants out of sheer respect for those few brave folks who have dreams and aspirations of providing a quality product in a friendly environment.
In my closing argument (and I'm NOT an attorney), wouold invite you to send me a PM and I will be more than happy to disclose to you why I made my initial post regarding Malabar. I hope that this will alleviate any contradictions that you might have.

I frequent Black Rooster, Manderes, Chicago Fire, T2Yan and La Fiesta. I avoid, but have tried, Applebees, BJ's, Macaroni Grill, Round Table, and Mimi's.
Restaurants have to do more than just be independant to keep me and others coming back.
They have to have a good product, nice atmosphere and well-trained staff.
I've been to Malabar a number of times and have been disappointed on several occasions. Everything from the waitress grabbing the wine glasses by the bowl (which leaves unsightly fingerprints), to bringing out one diner's entree while the others wait, to sitting at the bar waiting for service while the bartender and a server chat away, to being served calamari on a dirty, and I mean really dirty plate and getting an 'oh sorry, would you like another?', as a response.
An establishment like that is doomed to fail, not just because of what someone might read on the forum, but because of direct experiences of the people who go there.
If you don't serve your customer's well, someone else will.

Lately I've been frequenting the kitchen and seldoming the restaurants... I think that's true of most people and that's why the restaurant biz has been so hard lately, not that one restaurant is so much better or worse than another.

We've been trying to stick to home cooking, too. When we do go out for lunch or dinner, we try to go to the local places like Mandares, Black Rooster, Gold Miner, or Visconti's and we've been meaning to try Old Europe on Sutter Street.

Yelp has been getting some bad press lately. Apparently they will selectively review depending on how much $$ you pay for advertising.

I thought yelp was all based entirely on user input?
there's also urban spoon too and several other sites but yelp is usually pretty good based on the places I've tried and reviews I've read.
