That picture might serve as a deterrent to others who try to make their getaway on a light rail train.

Anyone who thinks light rail is a good getaway mode will get caught.

gotta luv onboard cameras!
the best solution is to arm all citizens, then when a dirtbag like that gets on light rail, he won't be the only one armed

He was on the I-80 line, not the Folsom (Gold) line.
Why would you panic anyway? Where you there, too?

I think they do, just not on all trains. The incident certainly left a lasting impression on the visitor from Sonoma!

I was talking to someone in the know at the outlets. She told me that the Outlets were a target for criminals since they opened, because their access to the freeway.
They did see a rise in shoplifting since light rail began service, with some crooks keeping track of time so they can make their getaways. She also noted that in the past year, crime has decreased at the Outlets.
Even with light rail, most crooks prefer to drive to get where they 'work'.

So if they mis-time their crime they miss the train and get caught? And if they get to the station 5 minutes before the train they do what? I dunno about this hypothesis.
Terry, "panic" refers to some other people around here who won't ride Light Rail to/from Folsom during commute hours because it's too dangerous, what with all the criminals on board.

Maybe a topic for another discussion, but I was talking to a friend of my daughter about just that.
She and I both believe that parents here in Folsom have led their children to believe that Folsom is the only safe place to be. They are warned to stay out of Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, Sacramento, Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco, LA, etc.
She told me that many of their friends had plans of going to school out of the area, but decided to go to Folsom Lake, ARC, or Sierra College because it's safer.
Yes, I know that ARC and Sierra aren't in Folsom, but the point is that so many of us put down other communities and the threat of violence there that our kids have adopted those same fears, and it can stifle their growth.
I know there are plenty of kids who do leave, but I know lots of kids in this town who won't.

I don't believe safety is the primary reason or necessarily a reason at all. I think for many the reason to go to Sierra, ARC, or Folsom Lake is because of financial reasons. They would rather live at home and save their money while getting their two-year degree so they can later transfer to their university of choice and go on to their four-year degree.
I don't think people are in a complete panic about riding light rail, but I also don't think light rail is the Disney experience some would make it out to be either. It's not necessarily about safety, but I don't particularly enjoy hearing "F" this and "MF" that, which is what happened the two times I rode, not to mention the guy shouting he was going to kill everybody until a rather large man in the back yelled at him to shut up.

I know that our local community colleges have financial advantages, and I'd encourage kids to think about that before spending the money on a 4 year institution, but as I said, many of the kids seem to just be afraid to leave.
