OK, it's official, I've received my Folsom Newsletter telling me about the Stage 2 restrictions.
Grumble, grumble, grumble. Even though my watering practices when it comes to how many days per week and what time during the day, I have always been compliant. But to avoid being dinged by the water police, I'll re-program which 3 days I water to meet their schedule for which my even numbered house is allowed to water. Grumble, grumble, grumble. angry.gif

This was the push we needed to figure out our sprinkler system. We have two different controllers, one was on the wrong time completely. We just moved here and didn't know how on earth they were set-up.

Spent a bunch of time out there yesterday and conquered it. The one controller is for everything front and back and then the 2nd one is only for one tiny drip line by the front door. Not sure why on earth they did that but whatever...

Reprogrammed it for 3 days a week, twice a night...10pm and 8am. I had it set for 5am but it kept waking me up! The one thing is right outside my bedroom window.

Fingers crossed...our lawn in the back was already looking fairly bad. This may put the nail in the coffin so to speak. sad.gif

I understand the need to conserve, but the way that reads I wouldn't be allowed to hand water potted plants every day. Am I reading that wrong? I have plants in pots that will die if they aren't watered every day in 100-plus degree weather. I could move some of them to shade and maybe stretch it to every other day, but some are too heavy to be moved.

I understand your concern. Pots do not retain moisture well, and on the hottest of days, often benefit from being watered early in the morning, and again in the evening.

The water restrictions are aimed at residential landscapes and will not impact your pots. You might try adding mulch to your pots. Just a thin layer of mulch will help retain moisture, keep the soil cooler, and keep the soil warmer in colder weather.

Thanks for the mulch reminder. Now that you mention it the mulch is getting prety thin.

I just realized I programed my houses backwards! I have an odd and an even numbered house and I got the programming backwards. I hope I didn't get a ticket at the other house.
Just figuring out how to program the day restrictions took a bit of time. What happens to our Seasoned Citizens who may not understand how to reprogram their systems? Is the city offering programming assistance?

Hi Robert:

I have found the city to be very helpful when it comes to these issues. In fact one of my clients called me this morning with the same issue, called the city, and they walked them through the process. They also offered to come out and help on site if necessary.

Not necessarily. Water usage and environment concerns are big topics amount golf course operations groups. There are techniques to reduce chemicals and water usage.

Most golf courses have changed their irrigation timers to work with the weather. SmartWise is a system that the City of Folsom gives rebates for, with residential customers. They cut water useage by up to 70% and run about $500. I recommend a water wise system to all my landscape clients. It isn't necessary to redo your irrigation system in most cases. Just exchange the timer. I know they have done this in Serrano.

If we used untreated water within the area for landscaping maybe we wouldn't have so much of a problem. I rode my bike around Roseville last spring and noticed that most of the irrigation was using untreated water.

That requires forethought by city planners to run two water delivery systems, potable and non-potable water. Pros are cheaper water for irrigation, cons, what kid hasn't drank from a hose, ran through the sprinklers with their mouth open,... Wide use of non-potable water requires the ignorant masses to become edumacated as to the non-drinkability of some of the water sources.

At one point it seemed to almost be a daily occurance in ElDorado Hills to read about a house with the clean water/ brown water installed backwards.
