However, I am still going to be  embarrassed by watching a Victoria's Secret commercial or walking past their store with my 13-year-old son or my father!

Fine .. don't look ... just don't try to take away an old man's right to put his aging eyes on a beautiful woman dressed in Victoria's Secret attire ...

I'm surprised this type of store wants to open on Sutter Street.

Sutter Street is pretty much a tourist area, especially during shopping hours. Tourists buy candy... ice cream... pottery... antiques. I don't think many tourists buy lingerie or sex toys as a souvenir...

I guess either the shop will fail, or else it will attract a whole new type of shopper to Sutter Street.

By the way, I don't think it's correct to say that people who oppose this are too prudish about ladies' underwear. REAL ladies underwear is sold at places like Mervyn's, Sears or Target. Maybe at Victoria's Secret, for the fashion-conscious. The stuff to be sold at this store is not underwear in the sense that any real woman would wear it as an undergarment. It is, basically, designed for only one thing. This raises all the objectification-of-women arguments (why do women have to be tied up in lacy ribbons like a fancy present for men's enjoyment...). I'm not trying to start a whole feminist debate here -- I'm just trying to point out that people who oppose this may have deeper concerns than just embarassment about ladies' underwear.

Border, I beg to differ. If you go to tourist areas of San Francisco or Sacramento, you will find shops selling fancy drawers, sex toys and gag gifts. Someone mentioned Evangeline's. It is a great shop. 2 stories of costumes, gifts, novelties, and yes, they have some adult entertainment stuff. In fact, on weekends, one can often find one of the employees dressed in an 1800's saloon girl's outfit. Broadway, in San Francisco, has a couple of those places. Bourbon Street, in New Orleans, has dozens. Tourists have been bringing back fancy pants to their girlfriends since they've been makin' 'em.

Being a father of 2 girls, I am sensitive to the objectification of women. I don't see this as the issue, though. Believe me, those shops would love to sell male lingerie, too, but most men don't look too good in it.

Hasn't anyone been to San Francisco???
I don't think it is that far away
If memory serves me correct there was a condom shop on Union Street and other assorted locations
so what is the difference
it could be worse
and if it improves traffic on sutter street
have fun

So much concern over something pretty tame...doesn't anyone remember that there was a lingerie shop on Sutter until the fire earlier this year closed it down?

I'm just glad something other than an overpriced antique store, or shoddy art gallery is going in. (there are a couple of exceptions on Sutter but overall the quality is missing) Perhaps this will signal a trend to a more "boutique" style shopping experience on Sutter. How about a good greeting card/wrapping paper store, how about a bookstore or newspaper/magazine rack? A used record store could be fun. Or even a vintage clothing store could be a nice addition. Now with the demise of Jitters, we could really use a good local coffee place. Some place you'd want to hang out in and meet your neighbors or tourists, if there are any left.

We should reserve judgement til we see the place...and remember, business is down on Sutter and most people are leaving the area because of the road closure. If this brings a little new life to the old gal I'll be happy to buy a new negligee.

I agree with bcFan, forumreader, and pcLady!!!!

I keep reading posts that said: Well, they have these types of stores in Old Sacramento or SF. There is a difference between Old Sac./SF and Old Folsom. Whether we like it or not Folsom is a family oriented community! That is the reason that I selected Folsom to be my home and I am sure it's the same for many people. If I choose to look at "toys" and other naughty stuffs, I go to X rated stores somewhere else. I don't want to walk with my kids around Sutter Street with this type of store.

Well, if this store will actually come to Folsom, I will try to help it fails..... . I will buy my chains and whips somewhere else tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

Perhaps Bill O'Reilly can be a sponsor? Put a big cut out picture of him in the front window!

Anyone who is wondering what this means, check out the harassment lawsuit against him detailed on www.thesmokinggun.com.

Bottom line is this is America, not the Middle East. If this were Saudi Arabia, those infidels would have been beheaded even for even proposing the idea of selling and displaying women's unmetionables. Now a burka shop, that would be nice and inoffensive. Perhaps we should organize a militia....

I talked to my 16 year old daughter about the shop last night. I told her that some citizens were worried about it ruining the family atmosphere. She said, "What family atmosphere!? The bars!?"

I can't believe people are than hung up on a Lingerie shop. I guess we still have a long way to go to kill our prudish values here in America.

A Lingerie shop with some sex toys will not do the following:

1) Kill Family values
2) Turn your kids into Criminals
3) Turn your kids into Sex Obsessed Adults
4) Destroy your life
5) Destroy our community

It is simply a place to buy some things that will add a little spice in your relationship. Which has also been known to strengthen a Marriage.

As long as its not a slezy porn shop, I will be giving them some business.

Help! Where are all these lingerie shops and pleasure parties? I feel so sheltered.

Maybe I'll ask my kids.

when you look at what happens at night on sutter its mostly bars so if folks go in the new store before they drive it going to be safer on the streets. I would think who goes in would be the lookers and not shoppers so I agree that the place would probably fail.

You know the city is working on getting more tourists to visit Folsom which is a good idea. with this store, there might even be a chance that old Bill Clinton would stop by if he was in the area.

Exactly! There've been too many responses to quote them all, but here are my main points again.

First, I understand that "normal looking" couples try out "toys and aides," BUT I don't picture them going to this store in the middle of their own town to get them. They're more likely to go to Sunrise, or a home party, or the Internet. So who does that leave to shop there? People who don't care if everyone and their kids see them walking out with leather chaps and chains... you guys that are so enlightened - will that be you?

Second, people keep going back to "underwear aren't going to hurt your kids" even though our objections aren't to the underwear in the front, if tasteful, but to the back room of "serious" sex gear. I don't have a problem with sex, but I do have issues with folks who are so obsessed with extreme forms of it - sorry, I think sadomasochism IS weird and deviant, and I don't want it promoted in my home's downtown.

Lastly, I want very much for Sutter Street to be revitalized and attract classy boutique style shops. This is not in that category in my mind, and will not help draw those types of businesses. I haven't been in every store in Mendocino, but I don't recall seeing anything like this there, and that is what I call a thriving village! If nothing else, please think objectively about the economic ramifications this may have on the area.

By the way, saying that other forms of smut are widely available doesn't convince me that we should add MORE...

And for everyone who keeps bringing up our acceptance of violence but not sex, what?!? When they want to put in a street fighter supply shop on Sutter, we'll talk about that...

Will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Deviant ... http://www.tomatopag...indpost&p=34538

Skinny people are deviant as 62% of the American population is overweight, therefore, that is the 'norm' in our society..... tongue.gif

Why should I be embarrased to go to a Lingerie shop in my own town. Why should I have to drive 45 min out of my way. Would I be embarrased if my kids saw me walking out of a Lingerie shop... No but I but I bet my kids would.

As far as the street fighter supply shop... go to walmart which is just down the street you can easily pick up Guns, Knives and where ever else you need. Oh and the violence that I was primarily talking about was the movies and video games that we let our kids play these days. GTA is a great example of that.

I think S&M is a little far as well, so I just don't buy that stuff. But I would like a place to go and pick up a few sex toys.

One thing that makes me happy is that in this country we can have discussions like this. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
