- EGUSD used their reserve and now has to come up with a plan to pay that back within a couple of years. Not an easy task when all projections show no growth in revenues.
- They chose to go to the 2% reserve requirement and not maintain 3%
- Elk Grove has about 3 times more teachers, yet their budget deficit is $60 million as compared to FCUSD's $15 million (rounded off for the unexpected $836K in the Mary Revise). That's a 125% greater burden on their budget than Folsom Cordova's.
I find it interesting that in the distant past, when revenues were plentiful, districts were fond of saying that you can't compare districts because they each have their own distinct priorities, but today we are being asked to make that very same comparison now when it comes to budget cuts.
We can't have it both ways. Every district is different and has their own budget management. I wish we could get past this effort to compare what other districts have done or are doing, what this teacher group has done or is doing. We need to focus our effort on the root cause of the issue:
- California is a broken state.
- It relies on 50% of the revenues generated by the top 1% or corporate and individual wage earners.
- It's funding for education is based on formulas developed over 30 years ago that bears no basis in reality today.
- It has made near-Utopian social-welfare promises it cannot keep.
If that's not Einstein's definition of insanity, I don't know what is. California has a worse debt crisis that Greece, and it's politicians are in denial.
The system needs to be radically changed before it goes bankrupt, which is, a very real possibility.

She referred to the Gov's proposal to suspend mental health funding for students. The cost would then become the district's responsibility further impacting our already underfunded special education program.

One can not spend more than one has and that's what our government in California has done by approving more and more social programs than we can afford to support.
It's easy to assume the money will always be there when we need it, but I doubt many do that with their personal lives. If they do, they are now losing their homes, because they were too far in debt when hard times came around and no savings to get them through.
This was bound to happen and although some will point to the cause being the housing market, that is far from the truth. This has been a long time coming because of unrestrained spending. Now nobody wants to take the cuts or give up any of their pay.
Hurts to come to the end of the road without any recourse, doesn't it? All you can do is suck it up and learn from the mistakes. But I doubt our politicians will be doing that. Too many of them think the only way to get elected is to continue to offer a free lunch, even though the pantry is bare. And far more wanting to believe that pipe dream.
And the beat goes on....and a chicken in every pot? (sic)

Thank you.
I just read it in the link Joanne provided. Middle School electives will be re-instated if this latest agreement gets board approval. The $ saved due to the 3 day furlough will be what's funding electives (they are still a little short though).

Announcement was premature. The vote is not even final until tomorrow. Technical miscommunications.

Sooo-now, instead of the public paying for my kids public education:
Teachers are paying for my kids electives.
Jesus, the irony is thicker than stew.
Who in the hell guilts the teachers into this?
This is wrong! Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Sounds like when media bios for dead celebrities get published before the celeb expires. Oops!
