What I find really bothersome is that every exit at my work has a smoking area near it. You have to walk past it on narrow pathways with people huffing away, when you exit the building. Technically the "approved" smoking areas are 25' from the doors, but the walkways to the parking lot go right through the smoking areas. Repeatedly I have complained that smoking areas should not be associated with employee in/out access, and that there should only be 1 smoking area so that employees have a choice which exit doors to go out of- if they wish to avoid the smoke.

just a pet peeve. Since I cant make any changes without the management approval I make sniping comments about smokers everytime I have to walk through the smoke haze.

You should fart in the middle of their group. They don't like that but payback is great!

So it sounds like the govt rules (distance from door) aren't useful. It's more important to get management on board. Hmmmm. :)

Sounds to me like you need both to make it work.

And if the patron refuses to stop smoking?

This is what we can do if they refuse to stop smoking

Interesting topic. I am of the general opinion that we need less governmental oversight and more interpersonal consideration. If you want to smoke, fine but do it in manner that doesn't bother other people. If you want to drink and party, fine but do it in a manner that doesn't bother other people. On the other hand, people should be a little more tolerant of minor transgressions; don't treat things as an absolute. If a guy usually smokes inside his apartment but his sister and neice visits once a year and he smokes on the patio, is it completely unacceptable?

The problem comes up when people consistently lack the maturity and consideration for others, especially in dense population environments. Different countries are addressing it in different manners. In these cases, as the saying goes, stupid should hurt. If a person can't live peacefully in society, society should push back.

That quote really rubs me the wrong way. Im not saying that people shouldn't follow societal laws or norms--but-I hold in high esteem those who do push against the norms and society and walk their paths.

I especially feel their paths should be protected (Like survivalists)

lol, this going off topic, sorry, but it all starts with a simple interest in something others dont think about.

Being somewhat facetious (actually, very serious that I would take this action):

If someone is smoking and I ask them to move or put it out because the smoke is affecting my health, if they refuse, could I consider their refusal as an assault with a deadly weapon (science!) and defend myself with all means at my disposal?

Why not? What says the barristers (not baristas) on this forum. Did I just go full Otter?

In the immortal words of Jean Paul Sartre, 'Au revoir, gopher'.

If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.
