Sadly, members of congress have lost the ability and desire to work hard, compromise, and do what's best for everyone. Both sides have fallen into the strategy of "My way or the highway". And who is to blame? Look in the mirror. We elected these clowns.

Crazy report for April 26 -
This one is a ratchet up from most. Today our president announced his new tax plan that will significantly reduce corporate and personal taxes, create jobs, buoy the economy, and create prosperity for everyone from the landscape guy all the way up to Warren Buffet. What's notable (and typical) is that there's no detail on exactly how this plan will be financed. The presidential spokesmen talked vaguely about how increased business activity will generate tax revenues amounting to "trillions of dollars" (one guy at the press conference actually said "trillions"). Without specific reference, this seems to be a recognition of the conservative mantra "tax cuts always pay for themselves" and a bow to the infamous Laffer Curve ( https://en.wikipedia...ki/Laffer_curve )
So, what are the chances this scheme will work out in a way the administration wants us to believe? One need look no further than to 2012 when governor Sam Brownback of Kansas ushered in revisions to the state tax code remarkably similar to what we heard today from Washington. Kansas actually did cut taxes, and dramatically.
Sadly, the results have been an unmitigated disaster for the state. Over the past five years, tax revenues have plummeted. The state has made significant cutbacks to both discretionary and essential services. Highway maintenance has all but stopped. Programs to help farmers during tough times have disappeared. Some public school systems have had to cut back to 4 days a week. Job growth has been abysmal. Pension plans aren't being funded. The state deficit has increased into the $100's of millions. The state legislature (majority republican) is on the verge of reversing the tax cuts. And governor Brownback's political career is finished. See this for details:
https://www.theatlan...-kansas/517641/
There are a number of very important lessons that can be gleaned from the Kansas experiment, but since the new crowd in the white house are amateurs at governing and public policy, I expect the lessons will be ignored.
Hang on to your wallets. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

Crazy Report for May 5 -
Rather than crazy, this is more of an observation of hypocrisy among the political parties.
Republicans and conservatives complain loudly about the obstacles to free speech, especially on college campuses. The impediments to free speech in these venues have become so pervasive and ardent, even liberals are starting to speak out about it. As a half-retired journalist, I wholeheartedly agree that political correctness has overstepped its bounds in some places, and speaking out is very appropriate.
Earlier this week, Stephen Colbert made some very pointed and off-color jokes about the president during his monologue. The next day, republicans and conservatives complained loudly about Colbert and demanded that he retract his words, apologize profusely, and that he be fired from his job.
So republicans and conservatives defend free speech, until the words offend to them. Hypocrisy reigns. Certainly you can find similar attitudes among democrats and liberals, but this particular instance seemed to catch the eye.
And please don't become fodder for the crazy bin by trying to justify the calls for Colbert's punishment by citing what happened to Bill O'Reilly a few weeks ago. What Colbert said and what O'Reilly did are two completely different things. The constitution makes a clear distinction between words and actions.

Crazy report for May 11 - a question this time -
With most politics being driven by polls and pollsters, why are none of them asking this question - "If the presidential election was held today, for whom would you vote?"

Crazy report for May 13 -
A review of this week in Washington has revealed one indisputable fact - a low-information voter has been elected president.
Most of the wonderful programs the president promised during the campaign have no chance of happening. Primarily because he has lost all credibility. He is his own worst enemy.

Hard to like the guy. But like Obama, I think I could sit down and have a beer with him...oh, wait, he doesn't drink. At least I much prefer his political slant over Obama's...meh. The only people screwed by any of the recent Presidents are freedom loving, taxpaying Americans.

Joe - interesting observation. And a prominent liberal agrees with you. Elizabeth Warren's most recent book ("This Fight is Our Fight: The Battle to Save America's Middle Class") chronicles the American middle class from it's inception in the late 1930's to the present. The book's overall conclusion is the middle class grew and advanced steadily from the late 1930's until the early 1980's, at which point it abruptly stagnated and made no further advances. And then in the early 2000's, it began to recede. Warren develops realistic metrics to measure the health of the middle class, then using those metrics, walks the reader thru the decades of prosperity, into stagnation, and then into decline. It's a very well thought out and interesting read.

Joe - funny story - Couple months ago, I was in Denver working on a story for a Colorado business journal. We were in a meeting, too busy to go out for lunch, and decided to order in. Went around the table asking what kind of food everyone liked, I said I'm not that fond of Mexican food. One of the young interns from the business magazine commented, "That's really racist." I said, "Sorry my friend, but guacamole isn't a race." His eyes got really big, but he didn't say anything. He didn't speak to me for the rest of the day. BTW, we ordered pizza.
