Opposite for me.  I went there with some friends of mine after we finished woring at the local elementary school for our lunch...terrible service, bland food, and expensive for the flavor.

Bobo Cafe is ok...I have only found one dish that I like, so that's the only reason why I go there...I have yet to find something good at Coco Palms...any recommendations?

Grilled chicken, grilled pork chops, prawns with asparagus, chicken with lemon grass, excellent chicken curry!, spring rolls, fried bananas with ice cream. All good. A friend had the crab meatloaf, which wasn't to my liking, but everything else was great.

I also like the staff. I've found the service to be quite attentive. The owner's wife did tell me one night that they got so busy, they couldn't keep up, and one table of four got up and walked out. They felt really badly about it, but just starting out, they didn't know what to expect, and ended up short-staffed.

With all of the chain places and their bland sameness, I really hope Coco Palms does well.

'Somone mentioned Yank Sing for dim sum. It is upscale and has a lot of 'nouvelle' dim sum, non traditional stuff like cream cheese filled wontons.

For more authentic stuff, there are many places on Clement. I used to get stuff to go at Wee Wah on Stockton. Hong Kong Flower Lounge is great. '

Ton Kiang on Geary is great but always a long line.
We usually go to one around the corner on Clement. I think it is Yet Wah.

Gigi's bar and grill is a hideously bad restaurant... if you want to know more about it I put a reply up on the thread with the same name as the restaurant in the small business forum.

But really if you value your health dont order anything with shellfish.....

How many people that have been putting comments on this board actually talk to the managers and let them know how bad their meals are?

I hope most of you do. If and when I get a bad meal, I let them know. They either fix it or I get compensation for it one way or another.

They do not want bad publicity. Most managers will take action, don't you think?

I am a serious sushi junkie and I learned to enjoy it from the place it was invented - in Japan - I was taken to many places while I was working there and I've tried it all - it was like going to college for sushi learning....so when i came back home of course I had to go around and see what was good - excellent sushi is definately hard to find

I've been to alot of sushi places here and by far the absolute best is Taiko Sushi (its my all time favorite) and a close second is Shoki Sushi

SF has some of the best sushi places in Cali....but thats too far to drive for dinner :P:

View Post

It really depends on the type of sushi...I grew up in Japan, and lived there until recently. So when I say sushi, I mean authentic nigiri sushi like tuna and octopus, not fusion rolls. I like some fusion rolls too, but they are not Japanese in my view. (You will never find them at sushi restaurants in Japan. There are some hip restaurants which specialize in fusion rolls, though.) I have been trying Japanese restaurants in Sacramento area since I moved to Folsom. So far, my best sushi (authentic) is Akebono on the corner of Folsom Auburn and Douglas. They have fresh fish, and they sometimes have specials like sea urchin which is shipped directly from Japan. I wasn't a big fan of sea urchin, but what I tried at Akebono was really tasty - so fresh that it didn't have "fishy" smell at all. Their sushi is definitely great, but I won' order anything which comes from the kitchen - other food they serve doesn't match up their sushi...

If I am having sushi in Folsom, I will go to Shoki - their sushi is pretty decent, and I found other food is equally delicious.

Taiko Sushi...it doesn't live up to the name the on off of Sunrise created.  When my mom and I went the service was just as bad as the food, we both ended up not finishing our meals and getting a burger from Wendey's on the way back home.

View Post

I too was a prior patron of the Taiko Sushi on Sunrise...for about 9 years. We then moved to Folsom and I was delighted they opened a restaurant in town. I've eaten at the new Taiko since it opened. I've never had a bad experience and the food has always been great! Granted it's not the same as the Sunrise Taiko, due to different owners/sushi chefs. But the ambience, food and service has always been an excellent experience for myself and my family/friends.

I can't believe all the bad words on Sol Azteca. When I first moved here, my in-laws were raving about Casa Lupe. Their friends raved about it too. Was the best Mexican food they'd ever had. I could barely hold down that darkened (aged?) pico de gallo they were passing off as salsa. I asked for *spicy* salsa and they brought me a small bowl of enchilada sauce. I thought it was just Northern California's eating too much fish and not being exposed to some of the better Mexi-American dishes (New Mexico and Arizona + San Diego have the best of this variety), but there have been several other bad Meixcan food dining experiences since then. I prefer the drive-thru taquerias over most restaurants in Nor Cal.

Sol Azteca is closer to what I'm used to -- Sonoran-style Mexican food. I would suggest ordering anything with the carne asada. They do their beef right. It was a relief to find a place like that after all the bad Mexican food places we'd tried.

If you're ever in Arizona, go to Macayo's and order any baja plate. The baja sauce (a unique jalapeno/cream cheese white sauce) is one of the best ethnic sauces ever created, and I haven't found any place that does it better than Macayo's.

I'm with you, YC. Sol Azteca has great Mexican food. their service blows usually, just slow, but they're nice people who make real good food.

A lot of people here wouldn't know Mexican food if it bit them en el culo.

That is mainly because there is NO REAL Mexican food anywhere in the vicinity...
what is served in most of these places is an Americanized mexican food... simple as that..
Have to experience it at its source before you can compare...
Same with Chinese - it is nothing compared to food served in hong Kong, China or Taiwan...

I've really been enjoying their margaritas. Also, their tortills are awesome.

Try Carmelita's on Riverside Avenue in old Roseville. I think it's the original owners still and they do REAL Mexican food. Interesting story about the family - years ago during Bush Sr's term in the White House, he named them one of his "points of light" and they went to the White House to be honored for their contributions to the US.

They're a wonderful family, and I haven't been there for some time, but if they still own the place (I know it is still there) you can't go wrong.

I'm just curious, but in China do they call it Chinese Food or just food?

I happen to like Sol Azteca. Reminds me of some places in So Cal. that I used to like. Maybe we've been lucky, but we've always had good service there.

I'm supposed to say something negative here because this is the "worst" places to eat thread, so I guess I'll say Red Lobster. We both got so sick eating there once we actually called the health department. Haven't ever been back to one of their restaurants. It was the one on Sunrise in Citrus Heights.

The red snapper in Mexico is the best! I also love their banana daiquiris. yum.gif
In America, they load up Mexican food with cheese and they really don't do that in Mexico.

We've been to Applebee's twice now and had a chlorine/chemical taste in our drinks/on our glasses (water and soda). Has anyone else experienced this? I complained both times and was brought new drinks......but I doubt they have resolved the situation. The waitress said that the machine just shoots out whatever amount of cleanser it is programmed for. Our service was horrible the last (most recent) time we were there.

We like the food at Mission Rogelio's, but the service is usually awful.
