BAM! There's more to this than meets the eye. If what you say pans-out, then the parents need to be on the hook for any and all expenses incurred...just like when these dopey skiiers get lost and we have to "find" them.

Hey, Chip - you're talking about someone's developmentally disabled child who has been easily taken advantage of before because of an overly-trusting nature on her behalf, not her parents. We're not talking about a 'dopey skier' who decides to go off the trails.
And as far as any 'expenses incurred', most of the work was done by friends and family, and a few wonderful people on this Forum who stepped up to help. The El Dorado County Sheriffs Department and the FBI did not get involved until very late in the search...and guess what? They found her.

Yeah, the fact the FBI is even involved seems to indicate that there's more here than just some MySpace meetup or some kid running away from home... not that it's any of my (or our) business anyway.

I'm just glad she was found - I really didn't have high hopes that this would end well when I heard about it.

I wonder. Since they were so forthcoming when this first began about what they knew and when they knew it, I wonder if they'll also be forthcoming about what really happened since taxpayer-funded resources were used?? I wonder.
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

If the FBI is still investigating the case, the family is undoubtedly not at liberty at this time to share all that they knew.

Which is what I already said.
Apparently, the conspiracy theorists didn't read that part.

As crappy as I find their comments and personal attacks on the parents, if anyone of these holier-than-thou poster's child were missing, I do exactly the same thing for them that I did for Kacie's family.
I pray for them that it's never needed.

Agreed. There are lots of hollier than thou folks everywhere and unless they are put in those shoes or unless they are parents themselves, they have no clue.

This thread has brought a lot of contrariness out of folks. Everyone wants to question something.

I think the real culprit in this is that some folks just don't understand how differently autistic kids function.

I am really glad this family has gotten their child back. I am sure that regardless of whether of not the child is challenged or not --any set of parents --after dealing with an ordeal like this--will really sit down and want to re-evaluate certain ways of maintaining communication--"safe adult" rules--and transportation rules for non guardian transpo of their kid.

Let's give this family some time to recover from this and let them move on. They have all been through a lot.

And EDH jen--I don't know just how much you were involved with the search and recovery of this young lady--but I am impressed with your strong sense of nurturing and wanting to help this young girl. I can only hope that if something were to happen to one of my kids--I would have someone like you to help me recover my kid as well.
Good job--for everyone involved in recovering this girl.

If anyone is remotely interested in getting a glimpse into an austistic mind, I would recommend reading the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. An excellent read.

Sorry. It's just that this story seemed to be a combination of 'the boy that cried wolf' and the girl who reports a rape and then recants the story (some of the parent's statements were pretty graphic). I'm not necessarily blaming the parents...just pointing out why some people show frustration with these kinds of stories. Hope that clarifies.
