Very true Darth, excellent point.
I always judge by if is a place busy and do they have repeat business.
Visconti's is always packed when I'm there and obviously they have repeat business.
I think maybe lemon is a disgruntled server/dishwasher that they fired..

Or lemon is right and everyone in Folsom that keeps going there has no palate and doesn't know real Italian cooking. (yeah right)

That's funny -- I always judge a restaurant by whether or not I like the food and whether or not it has good customer service. There are a lot of restaurants that seem to stay busy with a repeat clientele that I wouldn't patronize if they paid me.

There are also a lot of conspiracy theories (only occasionally justified) on this board about who people "really are" to the point it's hard for a real person to sign on without being suspected of being a sock puppet or only having an axe to grind.

LOL you're funny. Sorry Deb let me say it a different way for you. I'll write slowly....
I would generally look to the amount of business that a restaurant has over an online review when deciding if I should give that establishment a try. I then decide for myself if it is good or if it is all hype.
You see I was just agreeing with what Darth had to say about online reviews.
Hope that helps to clear up my paragraph.

McDonalds, Olive Garden, and Mimi's Cafe are all examples of places that do a lot of business but have predictable, mediocre, prepackaged, scorch and serve food.
I'm not saying Visconti's is in that category, but there are plenty of places that do well without having great food or service.

I'm glad writing slowly helped you articulate your point a little better.

Fortunately those of us who've been around here a while, and have on occasion met each other, know who's real and legit with their love of food. The anonymous never to be seen random posters with a seeming ax to grind will always be around, but they're easy to tell... they always think they know food better then everyone else as long as its in a restaurant 25-100 miles away from here.

Wow, a bit of a wine snob, aren't we? Wine isn't judged by its price, its appellation or the ratings of others. It's judged by its value to the taster.
I've had many a $10 bottle of wine that I've enjoyed much more than a $55 bottle. I've had many $35 bottles that were a far cry above an $80 bottle. I've had Lodi wines I've enjoyed much more than other (uncorked) Napa wines.
Popular, highly-rated wines of today (California-style) to me are just full of nose and alcohol and ICK. I'll search out the 85 point wines and skip the 90+ ones because of the flavor of the day.

Well said!
I've sorta done a study on this theory for a while. Port happens to be one of my favorite types of wines, the pairing with deserts can be fantastic. I've tried all kinds of ports from all over the world, and good buddy of mine who's a serious wine collector has even shared a few bottles of port in the triple digit price range, some bottles were older then I am... I've even gone out of my way when traveling on business to try local expensive port wines but you know what I found after all these years and all those ports?.... the best one I've ever had wasn't over $100, instead, it is a superb tawny that believe or not... costs $2.99! (and its made locally)
