Bravo pcLady!!!!!

QUOTE(pampChefLady @ Oct 14 2004, 12:15 PM)
Exactly!  There've been too many responses to quote them all, but here are my main points again.

First, I understand that "normal looking" couples try out "toys and aides," BUT I don't picture them going to this store in the middle of their own town to get them. They're more likely to go to Sunrise, or a home party, or the Internet.  So who does that leave to shop there?  People who don't care if everyone and their kids see them walking out with leather chaps and chains...  you guys that are so enlightened - will that be you?

Second, people keep going back to "underwear aren't going to hurt your kids" even though our objections aren't to the underwear in the front, if tasteful, but to the back room of "serious" sex gear.  I don't have a problem with sex, but I do have issues with folks who are so obsessed with extreme forms of it - sorry, I think sadomasochism IS weird and deviant, and I don't want it promoted in my home's downtown.

Lastly, I want very much for Sutter Street to be revitalized and attract classy boutique style shops.  This is not in that category in my mind, and will not help draw those types of businesses.  I haven't been in every store in Mendocino, but I don't recall seeing anything like this there, and that is what I call a thriving village! If nothing else, please think objectively about the economic ramifications this may have on the area.

By the way, saying that other forms of smut are widely available doesn't convince me that we should add MORE...

And for everyone who keeps bringing up our acceptance of violence but not sex,  what?!?  When they want to put in a street fighter supply shop on Sutter, we'll talk about that...

Will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

I wonder how many of us were around when the tatto parlor was opening on Natoma. I understand that everyone was upset at the crime and the 'element' such an establishment would bring to Folsom. People were concerned that this isn't the kind of guy they'd want running a shop in Folsom, across from City Hall, no less.

According to cops and officials that I know, there haven't been any bad guys hanging out in front of the tattoo parlor, wreaking havoc on the citizens. I am told the owners were asked to, and agreed to, provide face painting for the kids at the opening of the aquatic center.

People will be upset when the lingerie shop opens, but after a while, they'll go on with their lives.

Light rail is also an issue a lot of people are concerned with. They think bums will travel to Folsom to wreck havoc.

They will eventually.... isn't that the purpose of public transportation? Transport the great unwashed masses? rofl.gif

Well!!!

Initially, I was rather reluctant to post my opinion on this thread, but after reading the posts here, I have changed my mind. I might just surprise some of you!!! laugh.gif

First, my confession: Back in my 20's I used to frequent Victoria Secret and Fredrick's of Hollywood stores, and even received their magazines on a regular basis. Yes, I did buy things at those stores, but only lingerie. Of course, from my experience, neither store sold "sex toys" back then. So, I don't believe either to be tacky or below standards of decency. Heck, Victoria's Secret models are not allowed to starve themselves--they are required to firm up by lifting weights and eating healthy. That is why they look so good.

Anyway, I believe married couples should be able to do whatever they both ENJOY together, as long as no one is getting physically or mentally abused in the process. For, what a couple does in joy only serves to strengthen their love bond, which, in turn, strengthens their union.

However, in our Bible, Romans chapter 13, verses 11-14 says:
"And do this, understanding the present time. The hour has come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over, the day is almost here. So, let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dessention and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature."

Wow, what a mouthful! I will not here go into the damage "sex toy" stores do to our society at large, nor am I interested in trying to convince anyone to save themselves by erring on the side of decency. It is not my place to do that. That is each individual's perogative.

All I am saying is this: If you call yourself a Christian and wish to obey God's laws, then you may want to take the above scripture to heart, for it calls us to take a stand and not ignore our responsibilties as good citizens.

Yes, I guess there IS a fine line between lingerie and sex toys, but for all its fine-ness, there IS a line. As a citizen of Folsom, if you don't like the idea of a smut shop in the heart of Old Sutter Street, then DO something--take legal actions. Write to the store owners & ask them what type of store they intend to open there. Tell your City Council members and your Mayor why you don't want that store in that location.

Just remember, doing nothing is no excuse for complaining.

Good thing for me I am no longer a Christian. The fact that people believe that sex is only for procreation bothers me. Any god that would allow you to feel pleasure in an act such as sex wants you to enjoy it.

I am against a smut shop however I see nothing wrong with a Lingerie shop, even if they sell a few sex toys in the back.

The way you respond to points that no one makes is driving me crazy. No one said God doesn't want married people to enjoy sex! Are we reading the same posts? Additionally, no one is against lingerie! Can we please argue the same points?

If you were at the city council meeting you would have gotten a better story of what is actually happening there.

The back room is going to be completely "X-rated".

They would have to bring their X-rated items to the front of the store to check out so anyone out front would see their stuff if they wanted to or not.

Another thing that did come up at the meeting was that there could not be a church within 500 or 1,000 feet of this shop. Someone said that there was in fact one church and possibly two within the 500 or 1,000 foot distance.

Some of the business owners are trying to keep this from happening and I believe that possibly the chamber of commerce might be too.

NOTE: If you did not make the city council meeting, please tune in to Channel 14 Metro Cable at 9:00 AM Saturday or 9:00 AM Sunday and watch the presentation by the people. You will get a better idea of what is going on.

---------

My wife and I are against the X-rated store on Sutter Street.

If it was just lingerie and toys it might be different, but with X-rated videos and leather and thongs and whips and all it might be a bit more that Folsom needs, at least down in Sutter Street.

Well then, why don't we open another one down on Sutter? While we're at it, how about a Head shop, a strip club, and an adult bookstore? That'll bring in lots of desirable tourists.
