To put things into perspective, Avatar has made more in 16 days then Dark Knight made in 231. Looks like Cameron is about to own the top two spots for highest grossing films of all time.
Although believe it or not... I think Nolan has alot more potential then Cameron. His directing is second to none! But Cameron keeps coming out of the woods with these films and with his deep pocket book. Crazy.
Goodness there is about to be alot of annoying 3D movies to be released though. I guess we can only hope for a few good ones. Personally, I think if Peter Jackson resurrects the Halo film and has Neil direct it in 3D... it will score VERY high on the charts. The story to halo is great even for those who don't play the games. There is ALOT that can be done with that film and its got a huge following already.

Avatar passed The Dark Knight for domestic today and will pass the #1 spot of Titanic next week:
http://boxofficemojo...me/domestic.htm
By about tomorrow it will pass Titanic's Worldwide record:
(although they only update foreign grosses about once a week so it might take a few day to show up)
http://boxofficemojo.../alltime/world/
And with 36 Million this weekend the movie is still the #1 film at the box office by far so its got a long ways to go. This movie is going to surpass Titanic by a long, long ways and will probably matchup to the charts showing "adjustment for inflation".
I wonder what the next "big movie" will be? I look forward to Halo in 3D personally but I don't know if they have it planned...

Without giving it all away, what's the basic premise of the story?
Here's the memo...
WHITE MAN BAD.... INDENGENIOUS PEOPLES GOOD....

I didn't take the movie that way at all. Of course when I go to the movies, I suspend my disbelief and try to enjoy the experience.
By the way, I saw Cameron on The Jay Leno Show. He dismissed those criticism saying his younger brother (?) was in the military during the Gulf War (?). He has a great deal of respect for the military. He is going over to Kuwait to show Avatar to them. I believe he said he is going into Iraq too. He also pointed out the hero of the movie is a former Marine.

Another great day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

Interesting note though, Avatar taking over Titanic in box office rev is NOT adjusted for inflation. So while they've got the dollar figure, they don't have the same ticket sales.
Either way, heck of an achievement. Especially for a movie about blue sparkly aliens. =)

Yes, but I never said anything about the number of tickets sold.
So..
Avatar Worldwide Gross after 45 days= $2,042,741,709
Titanic Worldwide Gross after 287 days= $1,843,201,268
In regards to the number of tickets sold. There is no Worldwide ticket numbers for Titanic. Only Domestic of which is 128,345,900 estimated tickets and Avatar is at 79,859,600. I actually believe that Avatar is past Titanic in Worldwide ticket numbers as it past Titanic in Foreign alot faster then Domestic.
I will be shocked if they ever allowed another movie to be in the theaters as long as Titanic due to the abundance of films being made today vs then and how much money a film needs to make daily to even stay in the theater. Titanic kind of milked it a bit and I can't see them allowing that with so many big movies coming out over the summer. So, Avatar certainly has a chance at beating Titanic in that way especially since it was still the #1 box office film over the weekend by quite a bit. I will personally be shocked though as Titanic has alot of ticket sales due to the amount of time it was allowed in the theater.
Really it's silly to even discuss Titanic when the movie the movie to beat by a long shot is "Gone with the Wind" weighing in at 202,044,600.
Oh geez... I think I've gone cross-eyed : (

Very true. And for the record, I conceded the point about Avatar topping Titanic a while back -- but maybe it was in a different thread. VERY surprised at how well its done.

Now that you've actually seen the film maybe it makes at least a little more sense why it's doing so well. It's a tiny bit better then just a movie about "blue sparkly aliens".

It could have been, but ultimately it wasn't.
