I'm not sure if that is the exact company that contacted me last year regarding my supposed debt to Hollywood Video, but I wrote back demanding proof of the debt or otherwise to leave me alone. I never heard from them again.

You did exactly the right thing asking for written proof you owe the debt beyond a title and date rented. You also need to ask for written proof Hollywood Video or the successor have notified you of this debt and tried to collect from you in the past before sending it to a debt collection agency - something they can't do.
I think this is a second round of notices that are going out and they pertain only to movie rental late returns as far as I can tell, not unreturned items. A lot of people are getting them, some for titles they don't even recognize renting.

Wow, trying to remember the last time I used an old DVD. Maybe there will be a nostalgia store where you can buy then along with vinyl records.
