Oh that damn air horn I have heard it too. Started in teh past couple of weeks and it sounds like it is coming from over by Toby Keith's. I think it might be an air horn on somebodys truck that works there but I could be wrong. If I find out who/what it is we are going to have a few words

Someone blasts an airhorn during sports games at a park near me early saturday mornings before I get up at the crack of noon. But I'm a Harley rider and the noise doesn't bother me ;)

Very interesting article in this month's Comstock Magazine about air cargo generally and about Mather. Interestingly - it talks about how all California's air cargo faciltiies are seeing a decrease in traffic - partly because some companies are choosing to "bypass" California in favor of cargo hubs in Alaska, Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Regarding Mather specifically - the article notes that air cargo into Mather has gone from 167,000 metric tons in 2000, to 72,000 metric tons in 2008, to 45,000 metric tons in 2011. San Francisco's cargo volumes have decreased from 700,000 metric tons in 2000 to 421,000 in 2011. The same declines have been seen in all cargo faciltiies in Southern California.

The article suggests that keeping Mather open is really just political - that, with UPS being the only major cargo hauler at Mather (FedEx is at SMF and isn't going to relocate to Mather) - it doesn't make sense to continue to push Mather as a major cargo hub. In fact - and according to the article - operations at Mather are subsidized by revenues generated at SMF. With SMF not doing so well . . . why siphon off funds to try to make Mather something it's not?

Anyway - interesting article - called "Payload Denied, Dwindling Shipments Jeopardize Air Cargo Facilities" Comstock's November 2012

It's a subarticle discussing the "nose dive" that SMF is currently in . . .

But you don't operate an airport based on today's traffic, you operate it for tomorrow's traffic. Most believe the economy will improve. Mather also still has a military presence. The Army Air Guard is currently based out of Mather

More on Mather from todays Sacramento Bee.

Sacramento County started work on an expansion project at Mather Airport before receiving an environmental review required under state law, angering elected officials in El Dorado County, Folsom and Sacramento County itself.

The county spent almost $800,000 on a system that helps pilots land in fog. The equipment is part of a $108 million plan to make the airport a “regional air cargo hub” by improving runways, taxiways and other features at the former U.S. Air Force base.

The decision to purchase the equipment in advance of the environmental review was made by former county airports director Hardy Acree and approved by the office of County Executive Brad Hudson, records show.

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-
