I remember.   They would have races at the elementary school and then the winners went on to the park races.  I miss them, but I think the town has gotten too large for something like that now.

This is a great thread - so much variety! It's hard though to wade through 8 pages of varying topics. If these individual topics were spun off into new topics on the general forum, there might be more participation. Would also reflect more activity on the "General" home page.

Mods,  this subject of the Lake Natoma Waterfront & Trail Access project probably merits its own thread.  What do you think about splitting it off?

I just split off the conversations on the waterfront and trail access.

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

There is a public forum meeting about the East Bidwell Street Corridor project on Thursday, July 18, beginning at 5:30 at Folsom Lake College.  The projects extends from the Historic District out to about the Highway 50 interchange, I think.  They are getting a CalTrans grant of some sort for the project.

I would love to attend, but already have other plans that evening.  If any posters go and are willing to share what's up, especially in the areas more toward the Historic District, it would be very much appreciated.

I hope they treat the portion within the historic district (i.e. from the junior high school to Wales) to reflect the 1950s history there.  it would better reflect the age of the buildings in that area, create a theme and unify it as a zone..

I think that is where they are going to incorporate the multi-use ideas.  Did they have multi-use in the 1950s?

I will be happy to see better sidewalks and crossings, but I hope they don't punch through residential areas.

Yes, that area would definately be improved by being more walkable.  It would help slow down traffic and make it feel safer.  What does multi-use mean?  does that mean residential mixed with commercial?  In that case, no, it wasn't in the 1950s.  I think what you see there is what there was.  The strip malls, a bank, drive-ins, the bowling alley.  But it would be cool to look at the 1950s commercial architectural styles for signage, street lights, etc.  Kind of like a step back in time.  The way it is now, its not walkable.  In fact, even with the sidewalks as you go east on E. Bidwell, the length of the blocks makes it difficult for people to walk, so you never see anyone walking, but the cars drive very fast, as if its a main transportation corridor.  The historic zone shouldn't have that feel.  Should be more Main Street.  That would probably also slow traffic and help the residential areas.

Multi-use means commercial and residential combined, I think.  How many stories, I'm not sure.

I agree cars drive too fast and crossing for the middle school students is dangerous.  That's why I'm wondering what Tony meant by punching through a street.  If the school district land gets developed into multi-use and they can incorporate the lot by B of A and the Red Robin property they would possibly be able to cut through a street from East Bidwell to Riley to handle the through traffic.  That would quiet the portion along the side of Sutter Middle School and maybe even create a suitable drop-off zone for parents.  But that's just me guessing what they are going to do.

What would be great is if they would instead keep the development smaller and put in a plaza type of park with a fountain since this side of town is losing so much open space, but I know I'm just dreaming.  The loss of open space I'm referring to is the library being built in the park, the school district selling the ballfield portion by the district office, and the school district also wanting to build on the fields at Theodore Judah.

As Ducky said, no, the 1950s is when we got really serious about NOT having mixed use.  I agree, there is lots of room for improvement in this section, while still retaining some of the architectural feel of the period, although I can't think of much that was particularly attractive -- other than the shed roofs.  Seems like we had this discussion regarding Sutter Street.

With the way my kids are going through gatorade right now I wouldn't mind a vending machine. At least it would tie up space being used in the fridge.

My sister had three teenaged boys and couldn't keep enough of it in the house. She switched to the powdered to save money and trips to the store. I followed her lead and almost always have some in the pantry, though my kids are more water drinkers than Gatorade drinkers.

Did anybody go to the Open House regarding the E. Bidwell Street corridor project?  Thoughts?
