Flukes come in all shapes and sizes....Wisconsin is a fluke of legendary proportions. Hey, more power to 'em, and their groupies. Hmmm...when was their last National Championship??? Oh...that's right...sorry...
At least you can inject some humor into this... I'll agree that Wisconsin is no Michigan when it comes to the history of the two teams... but the turnaround the program has endured is quite amazing.
The university invested very little money in the sports programs before 1993... it is quite evident. Records of the major sports (basketball and football) were awful. Top state recruits were going elsewhere because they wanted to win. 30,000 fans filled a stadium that had a capacity of 77,000. The team had no chance of being televised in those years.
Then when Barry Alvarez arrived... things completely turned around. He has taken the Badgers to 3 Rose Bowls (1994... 1999 and 2000) and won each of them. Camp Randall completely sells out each Saturday they are in town. The team is 9-3 in bowl games since 1994. Top state recruits as well as many from out of state are now choosing to go to Wisconsin.
Sure Wisconsin doesn't have the history... or the number of national titles that Michigan does (since we have none)... but to say they are a fluke is rather ignorant. I would never say Wisconsin is on the same historic level as Michigan... ND... Florida... or several other teams. But I'd say that they have made quite a name for themselves in the football world over the past 14 seasons.
