NO, what is wrong here is a lack of objectivity and people who pretend to be caring about the victim where they can unleash their untapped rage so they can look like the hero of society.

I care more about society and end results than a feel good sentence.

so if your husband or child got mowed down by some punks being irresponsible and racing you'd be ok with them getting no jail time??????

I answered that question a few posts back.

Define punk.

Were they speeding or racing?

I care about BOTH. You don't seem to think both can be accomplished if we punish them. And the downfall of our society continues......................(shaking my head in disgust)
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

I can answer that. I don't care if it was speeding or racing. By doing either one they were breaking the law and caused death. They should get the punishment that I mentioned up above. I think there are better ways at times to punish people without jail involved. Not always- but sometimes good all around can come from it.

The downfall of society rests with its dumbed down underbelly and a shortage of people who haven't got a clue about what is going on........(Patting your head in condescension)

No, in this case, the punishment you advocate for will not serve society in any way shape or form. If you think taking some kids who were irresponsible and wreckless, but otherwise, decent human beings and throwing them in the YA where they'll basically be afraid for their lives, abused by hard core gangbangers, probably sodomized and victimized by criminals and possibly law enforecement alike and then they come out reformed and taught a lesson you're dead wrong.

But according to the rest of the posters...this is the only punishment that the family will appreciate or would serve justice...but I guess we are society of blood thirsty barbarians!!!

Punk, someone who disregards the law.

Man, that's alot of blah-blah. It will serve society because it will take these dangerous "nice little boys" OUT of society for a few years, and allow the family to receive a little reassurance that these animals are punished for their hideous crimes. A decent society needs to remove criminals from society for the sake of the honest, law-abiding citizens. And if they suffer at the YA, then "oh well". I thing the McNew's have suffered, too. If ya don't wanna do the time, don't do the crime. Pretty simple stuff, dear.

I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

Define punk.

Sure, no problem: "Punk": (noun): Generally, a male between the ages of 15 and 25 who drives his car as if he's in some kind of video game.

Well if the shoe fits... tongue.gif

I like the idea of deterrents too but it ain't that black and white. And neither is this case. We're talking about a couple of kids...got any?

Did they wake up that morning and decide to get behind the wheel of their car and kill somebody?

Deterrents are a nice goal but a better goal, IMHO, in this situation is trying to actually bring some good out of this tragedy. I'd go for the rehabilitation. And anyone who thinks California law operates under a rehabilitative strategy is sorely misguided. The recidivism rate of youth exiting the CYA is 70% or more. Why is that?

Yes I have two teenage sons. What would you propose for rehabilitation?
