I need to investigate, too.

BTW, is Stoli the best Vodka?? Need to buy some for a friend, without spending too much $. xmas.gif

Stoli is the best mid-range quality vodka - but Chopin is the best, plan to spend about 80 bucks for it

If I feel cheap I'm drinking Skyy Vodka and no I wouldn't "gift" that.

If I want better, I'm drinking Ketel One.

If I'm making Martini's and want even better I'm drinking Grey Goose or Belvedere.

Ketel One, Grey Goose, Belvedere are all good choices, as is Chopin.

Just for clarification, haven't been there yet, is Manderes a pub that serves food, and is not appropriate for kids, or is the point that it would be more fun without kids. (Assuming I was looking at a weekend lunch or early dinner.)

Spicy… Give us a try. I think you will like it. Bring a date, leave the kids.

They serve food and although its probably ok for kids, its kinda a higher end type place and I don't think kids would like it too much - its mostly an adult type bar/restaurant

- yes, it would be more fun without the kids, giving you and your spouse the "me time" that makes it nice going out together.

Don't ask spicy to try it, he/she/it doesn't drink - or so we've been led to believe - who knows anymore, I've given up on that anonymous entity here

Someone (Davburr?) brought his son, who enjoyed a BLT and onion rings. Maybe the age of the kid matters. It sounds like a place I would bring my 14-year-old, but I haven't been there yet.

OK, then it looks like you are putting Stoli in the "Ketel One' classification?, if I'm reading that right?? So Stoli would be a step-up from Skyy?? You don't mention Stoli....

Stoli / Absolut / Ketel One all are a step above Skyy - nothing wrong with Skyy - just noting that the others would be a nicer gift.

Beyond that you get into Grey Goose / Belvedere / Chopin.

If you were leaning toward Stoli - I'd be happy with it as a Vodka Drinker.

Well, there's been lots of discussion on here about the beer, but I'm not a big beer person. I've eaten at Maderas twice now and both times have had pretty good food. I'd even say "excellent" for bar food. I'm a food snob, so I wasn't prepared to be impressed, but was.

The atmosphere is excellent. Too many restaurants now-a-days have open ceilings which means you can't carry on a conversation without yelling. This place doesn't have that problem. Beautifully decorated. Excellent table settings. Hard to remember that this is a beer place in fact. And it's clean. No sticky tables or floors that you usually find in beer places. A step above you could say.

The first time I was there was opening day. I liked the food. Had a glazed grilled chix sandwich. Had their excellent fries and the best onion rings I've had in years. "black and tan" I think they called 'em. Very good. Chix was tender and juicy. Too many places have dried out grilled chix sandwiches. Not this one.

Opening day service was difficult. But the second time I went, there were no real issues. I had the calamari and shrimp cocktail. Both yummy. And they weren't stingy with the calamari, that was a big pile.

As I have grown weary and wary of Yagger's and Streets (and does Folsom Hotel have food yet???), I'm really happy Maderas has opened up shop. They have enuf wines to keep me happy with libations and excellent fodder, so all is good.

It's also wonderful that they cleaned up an eyesore on E. Bidwell. Truly giving back to the community, in my opinion.

Look forward to seeing Brent, Dave and the rest of the crew succeeding at their new establishment, and trying the NZ wine next I think......
