is it possible the remains were so thoroughly destroyed by flame that they can't tell who it was yet?

Agree it may take time as the poor soul was burned. However, there are two things are disconcerting: First, people know and are not saying. Secondly, the coroner is not releasing any statement that they are attempting to positively id the body. It makes legal and human decency sense to get it right and to take the time necessary to do so. Having some inside information prior to the crash on the cornoner's office and their resources (or lack there of) I was informed it may take months or up to a year for them to id the persons.

Think about it, if you are in the situation where you are waiting for an answer, knowing that this positive identification of bodies is slow at the county, how would you feel? I hope you never experience it because it prolongs the hurt.

Drove that stretch of road again today in the Suburban. The first gradual curve as you come up over the top is decent at 60mph, the next curve, which is definitely sharper.....had to tap the brakes. No way could I imagine taking that curve in an SUV at over 100mph. Most sedans and some 'sports' cars would have trouble. Senseless.

Are you talking about the perspective of the family and friends of the SUV driver or the Honda?

When this first happened, they identified the driver as a 19 year old from Folsom and later withdrew that. A 19 year old from Folsom did die that night, but apparently from a different cause.

The family of the SUV driver knows who he is, but as mentioned, it could take quite some time to identify the remains due to the condition.

I just received the following from the Sacramento County Coroners office.

Calvin,

The Coroner's office has not positively identified this person. When the results of testing are complete, we will release the identify. Thanks for your patience.

they are having to rely on DNA tests and that can take weeks.

I did the same thing months ago and was shocked at how sharp the curve was. There is something deceptive about that curve and the speed it can be taken. I too had to brake.

I would just think somebody would be looking for a person who didn't come home that night, and would zero in if the missing person drive an SUV

I think they know who it was/is. You are right someone did not return home but the coroner has to be correct and make the right call.

There were flowers at the burned section on the bike path when I drove by yesterday evening. I drive that crossing many times a week and don't understand how one cannot just follow the speed limit and drive safely. I had a tan Mercedes weave and pass me last week and when I got to the intersection of Folsom-Auburn and Douglas the car was only three cars in front of me. It just shows you that speeding doesn't really get you any place that much faster.

According to officials with the Sacramento County Coroner's office, they have yet to positively identify the second person killed in an Oct 13 fiery rash on Folsom Lake Crossing.

Don't know if it is too soon for levity, but killed by a fiery rash is pretty high on my list of things to avoid... (that is just one more reason why spellchecker is not your friend)

They don't like to guess with circumstantial evidence. But yes, they're obviously 99% sure who it is.

The Sac Bee Nov. 4 2012 reports the name of the SUV driver as Steven Ray Rothenberg, 49, of Fair Oaks, according to Sac County Coroner's website.

Crash occurred shortly after 12:30 am, FPD found a burning BMW was traveling at "extremely excessive" speeds when it crossed the double-yellow line and hit the Honda driven by Steven Schwartz of Orangevale.

I think the info was there as to who owned the vehicle and who was driving the vehicle, but since the accident has a criminal charge component as well as a fatal component, the ID was crucial since this one will be fought between the insurance companies and next-of-kin.

The way that statement reads it means the BMW was burning as it was driving at high speed. Did you word that intentionally? If so it makes sense why someone could be driving so fast. Who knows what control you'd have over your car if you were on fire.
