Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

The book starts w/ a little background on how the Minister of Magic calls on the Prime Minister of England during times of trouble, and how most of that trouble has been caused by Voldemort (Cyber, Farley and Hardy all shudder at the mere mention of the name). Since the end of Book 5, He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named and his merry band of Death Eaters have been scaring the bejeezus out of the wizard population and causing mass hysteria in the muggle (non-magic folk, for those that aren't in the know) population. Their dark magic caused a bridge collapse and an apparent hurricane in England (huh?) w/ many deaths and casualties.

Harry goes to stay w/ the Weasleys at the Burrow towards the end of summer. Bill, Ron's oldest brother, is engaged to Fleur, the really hot wizard from France. The Weasleys can't stand her, but Bill love her. Anyway, not a lot happens at the Burrow, so they go to Diagon Alley to get their books (since they took their O.W.L.S. at the end of Book 5), but Diagon Alley is virtually deserted because of the hysteria surrounding you know who and the death eaters. At an apparel shop, they have a nasty run-in w/ Draco and his mother. Harry puts on his invisibility cloak to follow Draco into Knockturn Alley and Burgin and Blotts, where every item is for the Dark Arts. Harry sees Draco threaten the proprietor, and the proprietor looked very scared. Harry thought that Draco was probably made a Death Eater to replace his father. Ron and Hermione thought Harry was crazy, since there would be no way that Voldemort would make Draco a Death Eater at age 16.

So they get on the Hogwarts Express and Harry decides he must slip into Draco's car (using his invisibility cloak, of course) to confirm his suspicions. At the end of the ride, not much has been slipped, but Draco stays behind and hits an unsuspecting Harry w/ a stunning curse and proceeds to just absolutely lay the biggest *** whooping on Harry imagineable (since Harry could not fight back due to being stunned). Eventually, Tonks finds Harry and reparis his broken nose before the train heads back to the station.

OK, the details start getting a little more fuzzy. Their classes are all brutal. Ginny, Ron's sister, is caught snogging (making out with- get your heads out of the gutter) Dean, one of the new people on the Gryffindor Quidditch team. Ron goes ballistic and basically calls Ginny a tramp. Ginny lights into Ron, saying that he is jealous b/c she has snogged several boys, Ron snogged Cho and Hermione snogged Victor Krum. She then said it wasn't her fault that Ron had all the experience of a 12 year old when it came to girls. Ouch!

As most who have read the series know, Ron and Hermione have always had some feelings going on underneath, so, being reminded about Hermione and Victor upset Ron to the point where he was no longer speaking w/ Hermione...again. Harry started to have funny feelings... of the adolescent variety... about Ginny himself. He tried to block them, but he could not.

Anway, back to the drama (ok, the perilous side of the story). Voldemort was drawing more and more followers. Draco was supposed to do something dangerous for Voldemort, but his Mom was very afraid for him and stopped by Snape's to enlist his help. With Draco's Mom and Bellatrix Lestrange watching, Snape took the Irrevocable Promise (or something like that) to make sure that Draco was safe. At this point, we still have no clue what Draco is supposed to do.

Meanwhile, Harry was given one of the school's supply of books for his Potions class, and it has a great many notes written throughout to help him perfect Potions and some other spells. It was owned by The Half Blood Prince (HBP, for purposes of shortening this), who shall be revealed later. Harry ends up the best in the class, which, of course, drives Hermione nuts.

Harry has also met several times w/ Dumbledore and is getting personal lessons from him. Harry hears about Horcruxs, a particularly dark type of magic. Dumbledore needs to have a memory retrieved from Slughorn, the new Potions teacher (oh yeah, Snape finally got his wish and is Defense Against the Drak Arts teacher) who used to be the head of Slytherin House a long time ago (when Tom Riddle, AKA Voldemort, attended Hogwarts). Harry retrieves that memory, which is where they learn about horcruxs and what they do. We also get a little more backstory on Tom Riddle, who his parents were and what happened to them.

Again, horcruxs are a particularly dark brand of magic, where a wizard splits his soul in two to assure that they cannot die whle half their sole is placed in a book (like in Chamber of Secrets- Tom;s journal was a horcrux). Voldemort, the most evil wizrd of all, split his soul into seven pieces. In order to split a wizards' soul, the wizard must kill someone else. Of course, Voldemort had no trouble w/ this.

(Time to move along this summation)

Suffice to say, Harry gets w/ Ginny by around 3/4 of the way through the book. Ron and Hermione don't get together per se (although Ginny's tirade resulted in serious snogging between Ron and Lavender Brown), but they are on their way. Before you think all's well that end's well, GUESS WHO DIES.

It's Dumbledore. He and Harry go after the horcruxs to destroy them, so that, if Harry defeats Voldemort at their final confrontation, it will kill Voldemort. Dumbledore is actually killed by....Snape.

Draco had let a bunch of Death Eaters in through a hidden room (the one that Harry had used in Book 5 for Dumbledore's Army), so there is a big battle w/ Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore had put some kind of spell on Harry so that he watched what happened to Dumbledore (Harry was covered by the Invisibility Cloak) but could not do anything (shades of Obi-Won Kanobe fighting Vader in the original).

The book ends w/ Dumbledore's funeral, and Harry must break up w/ Ginny, lest she be a target of Voldemort b/c of association w/ Harry. She understands, but they'll get together again at the end of Book 7. Ron and Hermione will get together, too. When last seen, she had buried his head into her shoulder at Dumbledore's funeral. Harry vows he is done w/ Hogwart's (if it even stays open w/ all that has happened), and he is all about the pursuit of Voldemort and Snape.

I'm sure I left out some big parts, but I'm getting tired thinking about (and I'm all over the place w/ this anyway).

My predictions for Book 7:

Snape will have been told by Dumbledore that he was supposed to have killed him. When Dumbledore was killed, Harry ran after Snape and Draco (who couldn't bring himself to kill Dumbledore, showing compassion that Harry did not know he had). Snape could have killed Harry, but did not.

Harry will live through Book 7. Ron and Hermione say they are sticking w/ Harry the whole time, so it appears they won't be going back to Hogwarts, either. Harry is going after the horcrux's of Voldemort. They figure there are fur left. The diary of Tom Riddle (one of them) was destroyed in Book 2, and Dumbledore destroyed a family ring dating back to SLytherin himself (#2).

It was a very good read. Even w/ a spoiler, it's a must read.

Because others asked for it. You don't have to read it since it clearly says it is a spoiler.

There is still a lot that was left out. The book is 600+ pages.

I can't wait for #7. Isn't the movie for #4 coming out this summer or fall?

I don't think you left much out, really, the book was a disappointment. It seems about half the book was about snogging and no action. So I figure number 7 has to get through alot of material.
