I started to sign up for the Folsom Glow Run and saw that it's $107.00 for a family of four. Is it just me, or does that seem too expensive? I would have been willing to pay around $60.00.

What do you get? T shirt and glow sticks? Anything else?

Given that both the Turkey Trot and the Folsom Firecracker have been  $25 for early registration and upto $35 for race day registration, it seems that the Glow Run is priced correctly. When we do these types of charity runs, we consider it part donation, part family fun.  Which organizations does the money from the Glow Run support?

ETA:  I just found a press release from last year's run and the family price has increased A LOT - what's up with that?!

2013: Advance: $25/person or $80/family or group of four; Day of Race: $5 increase

2014: $28  or $107 for family for 4

I couldn't find what the proceeds benefit on the city's site, but on Style Media Group it says Folsom Parks & Rec and programs like the Spring Eggstravaganza, Summer Concerts in the Park, Gallery at 48 Natoma Street, and The Cave teen centers.

Seems too expensive to me. I don't know what the Laffer Curve is on events, but I know that I have forsaken things I enjoyed when the price went way up. When Tommy T's became Jazz & Jokers for awhile (now back to Tommy T's thankfully), they doubled door ticket prices for shows. Suddenly, I had a lot more options at their price point.

It all comes down to if the product is a good value TO YOU. Still, I think at some point, raising prices to increase revenues starts to get diminishing returns, and actually hurts revenues.

I guess it's close to the going rate for runs, but this is the only one that attracted my children. I probably would have paused but then paid $80. Maybe. But we'll have to pass on the $107 amount. Just seems like everyone is wanting more and more money from Folsom residents lately: the school district Measure G, the local churches with their 4-year financial commitment campaigns. etc.

I know how you feel.  I've had to stop doing runs and not just because of my age.  They've gotten expensive.  I'd rather have a reasonable price than another t-shirt.

Actually, that's pretty cheap for a run these days. Run For Courage is $35, Octobrewfest is $30, Urban Cow $5K is $32 and the Folsom Blues Breakout is $75.

Well, if anyone on the planning committee is listening . . .

Perhaps the event is the going market rate for a run. But since the event was marketed to my children in the school newsletter, I, personally, am putting that run into the "family activity" category. So, as far as family activities go, this mom considers it as too expensive. We'll sadly have to pass. And maybe I'm not the only parent doing so.

Thanks for listening. : )

I agree with you, FolsomRes.  "Family" packages should charge very little for the kids, because kids don't earn money!  If you have 4 adult friends who decide to do an event together, they can each pay for a ticket, no problem, but it hurts when one adult (Dad) is paying for 2 or 3 other people.

Price seems very adequate, IMHO. It's not cheap putting events like this together. Consider that.

I can see both side, 'cause I've been on both sides. Family outings seem so expensive these. I'm glad that my kids are grown and earning.

There is a limited number of slots (I think 1500) available for the race, and the costs to produce it are high.

It's a matter of them taking up slots and the need to collect an adequate price for each.

You might want to just head down to the plaza after the race and hang out. The race finishes there and there will be 1500 people with glow glasses, necklaces, shirts and more. Should be quite a spectacle.

Glow Run: paying to use public streets?    Why?     Sept. 30, 2013, CA State Parks Folsom Superintendent sent me a copy of the city of Folsom application and "Proof of Insurance" to have this Glow in the State Park at Negro Bar. .....    with a band, amplification, huge lights, and running until 11 pm --   right there in the wildlife Conservation Zone on the North side of the American River.

Folsom Parks director had submitted a "Proof of Insurance" on letterhead of NCCSIF --  a pool of Northern California Cities which does Self-Insurance.    But the city was kicked out years ago.     A phone call to the Administrator for this public self-insurance fund revealed no such persons as wrote the "Proof of Insurance"  were associated with this group.      Tracking down the signatory on the "Proof" by 11:00 am, we learned this person (not with NCCSIF nor Administrator)   was fired suddenly hours before.

It was verified the city did not have NCCSIF insurance;     city P&R director could not produce any valid insurance Policy whatsoever for CA State Parks.      2014 "run" had to be on city's public land instead.   CA State Parks can give you the papers if you make a Public Records Request for the entire September 2013 Folsom application for mis-use of CA State Park land at Negro Bar.     I have no way to share them.

Where do you think the money is going?

2013: Advance: $25/person or $80/family or group of four; Day of Race: $5 increase

So, last year there was a $5 discount per family member when signing up as a family of 4 ($20 off). This year there is a $5 discount for the entire family of 4.

So, "sticker shock" to an individual is a mere $3; but, for the family of 4 that "sticker shock" increases to $27. Big difference. IMO, too much of a change all at once is bound to drive some away. We'll see how this strategy plays out on race day.
