Well, on the upside, Starbucks has huge draw and repeat customers. As a seed for future improvements, this may not be half bad. I do pity the rooster, but hope that can find a niche that Starbucks can't fulfull (I hear they sell beer&wine).

The bank I think we could do without. I just hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Also a note on Black Rooster, their prices are $$$, but so is Starbucks at 4 bucks a cup

True, but my same drink that is $3.35 at Starbuck's, was $3.80 at BR.

It'll be a seed for more chain business' on Sutter Street. Something I had hoped would never happen to such a beatiful area of Folsom.

I'm sad to see this happening and think its a really bad move for that area.

Is Jerry going to turn Old Town into a strip mall area for train commuters to shop during stops?

The black rooster is a 1000x's better then Starbucks and its worth an extra 50 cents for their goods compared to Starbuck$

I was hoping Folsom would never turn into another Roseville

A new 1 branch local bank, so it's probably not convenient. At least yet.

Unfortunately, we prove, time and again, that the people of Folsom, and in communities around the country, want chains.

Think of how many independent restaurants have come and gone, some lasting only months, whereas chains, such as BJ's, Mimi's, Applebee's and Macaroni Grill are packed, night after night.

We don't want good. We don't want unique. We want sameness. That's what those places sell; sameness.

I'll never forget going on a business trip to Japan with a host and 5 others. The host, who had lived in Japan, wanted to show us the 'real' Tokyo. He knew where to go to experience the art, culture, and the great food (not expensive if you know where to go).

The rest of the group wanted to go to Roppongi, the district where most of the tourists are American or European, and where one can find Denny's, Burger King, McDonald's and the Hard Rock Cafe.

These people travelled half a world away to eat a Grand Slam Breakfast and a cheeseburger? They wanted the sameness they had at home.

Don't be too surprised if we find the GAP and Sunglass Hut opening on Sutter. They are guaranteed success.

I agree. I have to admit, I do like Starbuck's (please, no rotten tomatoes), but it's not where I go when I want to hang out with a pastry and a cup of coffee. I am always amazed that Mimi's, Macaroni Grill, and Black Angus are always so busy. THey are horrible. I used to like Macaroni Grill more than five years ago, but it's just so blech now. Never liked Mimi's or Black Angus. We live in Empire Ranch and those are our close choices. We are so happy for Jack's. Finally something a little different. Also, I'd give anything for us to have a decent Italian restaurant in Folsom.

What always makes me think about the chain/culture thing is just going back to New York. When I go back there to visit family, I love all the culture and history. I love that the food is so unique, compared to what we're used to. The cold cuts and cheeses on Arthur Avenue. Yum!

It is sad to see how much people appreciate the sameness. Ray Kroc figured that one out early.

I am sick of starbucks. Who needs $5 coffee. For god sakes to your legal drugs. The bank is a nice Idea but it better be a bank that people want not some no convient crap bank. Also having a bank near the light rail==bad idea. Look at river city downtown last week. If it wasn't for the rite aid the crook would have gotten away with the money. (LOL)
Well if last post before new year, have a happy new year, my resolutions, REMOVE STARBUCKS and CRASH MYSPACE. (LOL)

What's wrong with Visconte's? Besides their horrifically overpriced wine selection.

Mweh. Just okay, but nothing to get excited about. I do have to admit, they are about the best we have, but I wish we had better.

Watstein - I have always said that Starbuck's puts crack in their espresso!

It's ironic, though, that Starbuck's is the most reasonably priced coffee that I've seen. I'm not saying it's not a waste of money, but they are cheaper than most (It's a Grind, Java City, Coffee Republic, etc).

Is that location where the steak house is supposed to go?

The steakhouse is (hopefully) going on the east end of Sutter. Up from Chicago Fire.

I believe the Starbucks is rumoured to be going into the existing building at the other end of Sutter, across from Pachanga. Where Lockdown Brewing Co. was supposed to go.

The guy who owns powerhouse and those bldgs is smart - he's bringing in the right business' to make Sutter Street a happening place to be. He did good with Scarlets and expanding Chicago Fire

IMO, Sutter Street now ends entirely at Pachanga's, nothing worthwhile beyond that great place now that I found Jerry's screwing things up with putting in chains on Sutter.

What a disspointment Jerry is turning out to be, I thought he was going to do good for Sutter but that does not appear to be the case. I hope he doesn't lease the other part of his bldg out to Walmart or something like that, but who knows - maybe thats next in his plans for Sutter - turn it into a commercial chain shopping center just like every other strip mall around town.

Maybe the guy who owns Powerhouse (sorry, forgot his name) could teach Jerry a few lessons on how to bring in business' that people are interested in and that make an area great.

Chain restaurants and business' suck! I'd rather support the little guys and the unique independant places.

At least it's not a chain, but an independent business. That's what a lot of people want to see down there.

I have to say that it sounds pretty funny to hear you all complain about a bank and a coffee shop when it's yet another bar you wanted. Another bar?! Come on! Is Sutter street supposed to be the next great place to find hundreds of people at a time all gathering in one area to get intoxicated or is it supposed to be a place where families want to come and spend time enjoying the history and unique shops? There is already too much alchohol there, thank you. I don't need to take my kids for a saturday stroll down the old streets for lunch, a visit to the museum, an ice cream cone and to watch a bunch of drunk twenty-somethings hootin and hollerin.Very nice, very classy, another bar. No thanks.

The toy store will be very nice, a bank and starbucks is basically innocuous. And speaking of shameless greed (since you brought it up in a previous post), who's doing the whining here? The guy who didn't get to put the bar in? His friends? I doubt it's the other local merchants or families who patronize Sutter street.
