Hey, Dave -- I'm glad you shot pictures of the cheese and meat vendor, who is carrying Leyden cheese from The Netherlands. I'm curious if it's young (mild) or aged (too harsh for us). We'll try to head down there this weekend. :)

The cheese lady was also at the market on Friday at the old Ralphs parking lot.

I went to the Farmer's Market today, got there about 1130...it looked like the vendors were close to packing up which is ok...I'm glad they were still open. There was very few vendors, and maybe only 2 other groups of customers.

The Farmer's Market was in the concrete area just south of the parking garage. There is no shade coverage, and it was hot.

There were 4 vendors selling "fresh" (actually looked wilted) produce. Nothing looked appetizing. There was a nectarine guy, 2 asian vegetables vendors, strawberry stand (with 1 little basket of berries displayed). A bakery, a chiropractor, the honey vendor...I think there was even a fudge vendor. There was also a banjo player. And the lavender lady who was there for the first time. She remarked how surprised she was that this market was so dead.

The selection was extremely limited, and no one had tomatoes.

sigh.....guess I'll be going back to Sunrise, or the sunday-under-the-freeway for a real Farmer's Market next weekend.

Vendors can only charge what the market will bare no matter how much competition or not is present. I do agree that it doesn't seem to be very wise to operate our small market that way, the more vendors there are, the better....

Does the Intel farmers market have multiple vendors with the same stuff?

We went to the Intel farmer's market last year and they had mutliple vendors selling the same stuff. It is small too

tomatoes are late this year. I wish the plaza design had included shade cover like the farmers market in davis has. everyone loves that place! hot is not good for a farmers market. I wish they could come on Saturday morning instead of Sunday. Karen's would be open across the street and it might help business.

I believe the same group of vendors is at the recently opened FM on Sat in the Home Depot parking lot. I also have been by the Sun site; both times very warm (read HOT), little to no shade, limited number of vendors, seemingly no competition between/among vendors so prices were on the high side (IMO).

I didn't really look at all the prices, but I do know when there is no competition, they will charge higher prices. We did buy the last two 3-packs of strawberries from one of the asian farmers for $5, which due to the language barrier he acted like it was a great deal while he talked in his native language to his family...for all I know they were saying how gullible we were. They had been selling for $2/basket. Oh well, despite the berries being small, on the verge of being too ripe, they were delicious. Another vendor had raspberries 2 small containers for $5, same exact price as Whole Foods.

What's FM?

I agree a Sat market on Sutter Street, might be better. And maybe under the trees closer to the light rail.

Edit: yes, I did hear the tomatoes are late. Thank goodness for tomatoes at Trader Joes!

I saw the farmers market at Home Depot. $5 for blueberrys, and the cartons were small and not even all the way filled. Straw berries on Oak Ave Pkwy looked yummier and are the same price. The smoked salmon was $15/pound and the cooked salmon was $20/pound. That seemed a bit high. The lady told me it was fresh fish. Then told me it was three days old--a day to catch, a day to prep, and then a day sit, before it is smoked. I didn't follow her logic, which may have been my fault because I was so danged hungry I was wanting to diengage and walk away....

Anyway, There was a lady there selling pastries. There was a guy there selling jams. I was looking for fresh clover honey but didnt see any. Ah well.

I went to the evening FM in Fair Oaks this week. It was held in the park, on grass and under huge shade trees. All the village shops & restaurants were open. It was fantastic. Goes to show you that an EVENING farmer's market CAN be successful contrary to popular belief. There was about 20-30 vendors with a good mix of fresh fruit & veggies, food & other items. There was a very good selection, and prices were reasonable. The strawberries from Salinas were out of this world yummy! I just had the heirloom tomatoes tonight but they were tasteless.

I saw the lavender lady who reported that there were many more customers last Sunday in Folsom (good news!), and she will be attempting to talk her fellow Fair Oaks vendors into coming to Folsom also. I sure hope so.

Went again this morning to the Sutter Street FM. It is still a total disappointment. There may have been one additional fruit/veggie booth but there was still very little to choose from. The prices are higher and the quantity (amount of produce in a container) was less than just up the hill at Town Center in EDH (which is also from 8-12 on Sundays). No need to go back unless things dramatically change. So sorry Folsom.

I completely agree with you. I went there this morning for the first time and won't be going back either.

Hmm ... It is hot . Its a beautiful area they have built thus far . Unfortunately no shade thus far . But this is the place we were moved to . Think that's four moves in six years , just saying . This market is run by actual farmers . We have always wanted fresh and local . That's what my daughter gets . We believe in supporting the community and working with it when something isn't working . I know that the market manager is at this market every Sunday ,or Saturday from when it opens till when it closes . Just depends on which one you are talking about . Please , if you have questions , concerns ,or just a friendly smile seek her out . She grew up on a farm and has been around agriculture her whole life . She actually was voted agriculture advocate of the year last year for el Dorado county . I will be updating our page on here with pictures and some more info . Like my wife I wear many hats . And am happy to help in any way I can . In my line of work I find dialogue makes a huge difference in growing business . Josie and I look forward to seeing many old friends on Sutter in August and September . Till then find some shade . Marc

Hi Marc. Nice to hear you guys are open to our questions and concerns, etc. We would LOVE to see a really successful market in old Folsom. Hopefully some others will pitch in with their concerns too.1

Hi Folsom Market

I really want to see the market survive.

I've offered a couple of suggestions through the Historic District website.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that there were dozens of people standing around waiting for a table at the Sutter Street Grill. They looked bored. I wondered how many of them were even aware there was a farmer's market.

There was a sandwich board with a small sign and an arrow pointing to the market, but that was down at the corner of Decatur and Sutter, and with construction going on, the sign may look like just another construction sign anyway.

I wondered if someone from the Historic District or the Market went up to the crowd with flyers, or discount coupons, or even samples of those awesome nectarines I bought might encourage folks to shop while waiting for their tables. It might even become an insider tip; put your name in at the restaurant then walk across the street to buy some fresh produce.

Maybe getting more farmers to participate by giving free space away for a month or a couple of weeks.

Maybe get someone to come a play music. Musicians work cheap, or maybe even free if they might be able to sell CD's too.

Get balloons. Something for kids.

Maybe an SPCA adoption station nearby (not too close to the food!).

That's all I got.
