Folks, Folsom high has a world-famous jazz program, winning awards and traveling to play festivals from Monterrey to Montreaux.

Every year, we have the Folsom High Jazz Fest, as well as concerts and fundraisers for this great program.

So, what's the problem?

After they graduate, there's no place for these kids/young adults to play, and no place for us to listen to jazz.

Why is that? If we love and support jazz, why isn't there a jazz venue in town?

Yes, there are occasional big-name acts coming through the Harris Center, but we can't drop in on a set, or have regular jazz programming at any of the local restaurants, bars and hotels.

Does anyone care?

What a fantastic idea Steve!  What say we buy out the Cliff House. Blow out the south wall, add a huge outdoor area, lighten it up, serve Ca fresh cuisine and become known as THE place for jazz after hours... good heavens, what a money maker as well as a great community boost. Now we just need some venture capital...(hey, I have 2 in college so, uh, I'll gladly pay you on Tuesday for an investment today)  <wink>

Seriously, local establishments are missing out on a huge local resource and customer pool.

Traffic and driving-wise it's a terrible location, but the cops would love it, as it will always be a drinking spot.

That is a huge problem for that property, otherwise someone would have done that by now, Joe.

Turning the Cliff House into a jazz club would be my idea of heaven. People typically visit a jazz club for the music and not to get drunk. Take Yoshi’s in SF, it’s amazing. Great music, atmosphere, crowd and no sloppy drunks to ruin the ambiance. If you drink a little too much, I think the crowd it attracts would be mature enough to call Uber or Lyft.

Several years ago, Harold and Allison had the right idea when they opened Artiz Jazz club (Get it? Art Is Jazz?) in Folsom. During the brief time they were open they had Joe Gilman, Steve Homan, Francesca, Cynthia Douglas and many more. They were ahead of their time, Folsom wasn’t ready. I’d like to think our city has grown enough that we’re ready now.

I agree that the Cliff House would be a great venue!

Yes, the jazz crowd is quite a bit mellower than your typical rock or hip hop scene. Plus, we go home earlier.

Sadly, Yoshi's SF is closed, but the Oakland locaton is still there, though it's no longer focused solely on jazz.

I remember Artiz! it was 2001, I was new to Folsom, and my wife and I went a couple of times. I think the main problem was the location on the back side of the building where Zinfandel Grille was. No one knew it was there.

Well, that shows how often I get to SF!!

The complaint I heard most often about Artiz was the cover charge. I don't remember the exact amount, but some thought it was too high. Whatever it was I thought it was well worth it for the great entertainment and intimate atmosphere.

It would be great if a local business would dedicate one night a week (or every other week) to live jazz - much like they do with trivia nights. That could be an indicator if there's a market for jazz here in Folsom or if we're forever doomed to drive to Sacramento.

Great idea!  Many of the Jazz players and singers who went away to college are back here.  Keep planting that seed in people's heads.

A ‘new’ venue for jazz in today’s Bee, the Roland on Broadway. Sounds like fun with the ‘upbeat nightclub vibe.' I’ll check it out, but I won’t head down to Sacramento twice a month on Thursday nights – too late for me. If you go, please post a review.
