My daughter just called me from the middle school on her lunch hour and said - I just wanted to say HI and I LOVE YOU MOMMY. She does that every single day at 12:20.

That's worth paying for the cell phone right there. She also knows there are rules to using them and obeys them.

Yeah but hopefully she'll learn a lesson, even if it has to be taught several times. I swear some people just don't get it.

Nope, just trying to make sense when people break rules and complain about the results.

I think there's a disconnect here Darth.

The person that broke the rule (the daughter) did get punished by having the phone removed from her.

The parent who did not break the rule and understands what the rule is for and agrees with it - was having her property retained by a gov't entity which has no right to do so - schools are not law enforcement. The school (gov't entity) had no legal right to attempt to hold the mom's phone regardless of their rules for students.

Why don't you mind your own damn business and deal with the topic. I'm sure there is a reason for the phone. My kid has one for very specific reasons.

I'm not necessarily for a cell phone for elementary school students but I'm with Chris on this one.

If he has a phone for his kid for a reason, that's his business not yours to ask.

And seriously, I hope someone youtubes laying the smack down on one of these teachers / administrators because some of them have a WAY to 'holier than though high almighty' opinion of themselves and need to be smacked down a couple notches.

Do you actually read the posts before you respond?

Yep. And i still don't understand why the OP is so upset that her kid broke the rules multiple times and she is more worried about a stupid cell phone rather than her kids behavior in school.

It seems obvious which is more important.

Actually, I guess I should clarify.

This was the first time she had texted in class. The first offense was, she forgot to turn off her phone before going into class, it made a noise, so it was taken away, I forget for how long. I have no problem with that, having a cell phone make noise in class is disruptive, and it should be taken away.

I don't know what you mean by it not being a good sign. Not a good sign of what? Of my daughter being a regular kid who messes up sometimes and, hopefully, learns from her mistakes? As we all do?

Middle school age is a trying time for parents. Your children are growing up, they are seeking more independence. And its important for them to be more independent. But at the same time, parents are anxious about their safety. I find the cell phone to be a very valuable tool. She wants to walk or ride or skate to school. It makes me nervous, but I don't want to stifle her growing sense of independence and responsibility. So I ask her to call me when she gets there so I know she's safe.

And that's my choice. This is my kid. That's the point.
I have a hard time deciphering the fine line between boredom and hunger.

If her kid was disconnected from the stupid cell phone there wouldn't be a need to bash the school now would there?

You'd think (hope) after the first offense it wouldn't happen again right? Or is the school to blame for that as well?

That's true...just know the rules, and try not to make excuses for the intentional 'mistakes' of your kid.

I don't know about you, but I was perfectly able to go thru a school day with no phones, no gadgets, no junk that would distract me from learning.

I know, I know....what a concept!!! wacko.gif

Classic. Those without kids of course know exactly how to raise them!
