I've hosted Thanksgiving at my place ever since my dad passed in 1994.
Thanksgiving was his favorite day of the year, and it's become mine, too.
We've increased our guest list over the years, but trimmed down the number of dishes and our processes to make things easier. So, with that in mind, I'll be...
Brining a turkey, using kosher salt, brown sugar and apple juice, and will throw in some herbs and stuff
Wife making her Cajun corn bread and shrimp stuffing, which she does the night before
Also doing a rice medley with mushrooms and maybe walnuts, again, the night before
Mom-in-law bringing mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce
I'll be making gravy from some of the pan drippings.
Wife will make a couple of veg.
Sis-in-law making a salad.
We used to do all of those things ourselves, on Thanksgiving Day.
Now, we'll get to enjoy the daffy in-laws, the brother who just gave up drinking, my daughter's friend who SHOULD give up drinking, the wife's vegan step-sister, various friends who may pop in, and some football.
We always pause to give thanks and to remember those we've lost.
I forgot to mention the pie! The evening usually ends up with Elf or some other Christmas favorite on in one room, holiday music on in another, as we eat sis-in-law's pumpkin pie or a caramel apple pie from High Hill Ranch.
We've got a bunch of good wine and champagne, too.
I just loves me some Thanksgiving!
What's yours going to be like?
