So, I haven't had a dog in about 40 years, and my daughter adopted what many consider to be the cutest, sweetest dog ever to grace the earth.

She is very affectionate, loves to sleep in between me and my wife when they come to visit, and generally spreads joy to everyone she meets.

There's just one problem:

She likes to roll in poo or other stinky substances.

She seems to have a preference for bird poo. They live near the ocean and she looks for bird turds to roll in. Likes it on her neck.

Worse part is when you don't know she's done it, and she gets in your bed or on your lap for some rubbin' and you smell it (hopefully before kissing her or touching it.

What the heck is wrong with her?

Anyone have any experience with this?

PS. Some might think this is just an opportunity to show a picture my beautiful daughter and that sweet little dog. I'll cop to that.

That's what dogs do (at least many of them).  I've been told it's a conditioned thing from the days of wolves and early dogs and that it conceals their real scent from prey.  Probably doesn't help them get the kibble!

I don't know. Thankfully, none of my dogs have ever done it.

Very common, Steve.  One of my dogs -- an otherwise brilliant border collie-- pitched herself down when we were walking alongside a pond and rolled around in goose poop.  Looked very pleased with herself afterwards.

My current dog isn't quite as determined, but occasionally he will succumb to an irresistible "perfume."

I assume they have an instinct to disguise their own odor... maybe it goes back to their hunting ancestors???  Kind of like how my dog lets loose with full howls at sirens -- we say he thinks it is his wolf ancestors coming to visit...

My dog loves to roll in cow poop when we visit my sister.  He just can't resist it!   Beautiful daughter, BTW.

I have had a lot of fun reading the myfolsom and facebook responses.

It seems everyone knows one of these lovers of poo smell.

Thanks for the compliment on the daughter. I love her almost as much as the dog.
