I ate at El Rincon last week, it was delicious. I had the chicken fajita bowl & thought the (chicken, peppers, squash, onions, salsa & guacomale) flavors blended perfectly. I was also impressed with the tasty, lightly salted chips and chunky salsa.

Now that it's winter, I'm looking for some Albondigas soup. Does anyone know where this is served? El Rincon did not have it on their menu.

Yep. they are my go-to Mexican for the last few years. Not only consistantly good food, fresh homemade salsas and beans but it's also a great family owned buisness. I've enjoyed seeing their son grow up there - doing howework in the corner and helping out behind the counter.

There have been some great restaurants mentioned in this post. I'm surprised that Dos Coyotes didn't get more plugs. Great food and portions. The Border Burrito and the green salsa are the bomb.

I LOVE Dos Coyotes, but I don't consider it to be Mexican. I know they advertise as southwestern...I don't know how accurate it is, but it has definitely been my go to place since moving to the Sacramento region.

thanks aztransplant, I ran through a search also yesterday looking at all the places that were recommended here & I came up with some of the same places.
I have lots of places on the list to visit now.

Went to Casa Ramos last night...I'm underimpressed.

The service was good. Almost too attentive though...with everyone (host, waterboy, waiter) hovering, asking over & over how things were. And the waiter sort of slammed the food down on the table... It was weird.

The chips were hot, but the abondigas soup was very bland and had very little substance, and my companions food looked like typical americanized mexican restraurant food. One of the ladies even ordered lamb shank....most unusual. I got the impression that it is one of their specialties. Oh, and the fried icecream...hard as a rock. I've never had to dissect fried ice cream before, even after the fried shell was broken.

Hubby and I went to Felipe's last night and was very happy with the food and the service.

I think their chips and salsa is the best around. Their prices are very reasonable and the portions are generous. I couldn't eat all my dinner and took about a third of it home.

For traditional Mexican food, that's where we always head....great food, nice atmosphere, and clean. Give it a try if you want a calm atmosphere and relaxing dinner or lunch, away from the maddening crowd.

I finally went to Felipe's last night. I agree that they have fantastic chips & salsa - I could not stop eating them! I agree that the prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, the atmosphere is calm and the service is good.

The food was decent, but somewhat on the mild/bland side. I did try the abdondigas soup. It was ok. The broth was a little strange, had a funny flavor that I can't really pinpoint...sort a reminded me of spiced up (but bland) dishwater. The meatballs were tasty. There was a few lone chunks of carrot floating around, but it mainly consisted of the weird broth. Adding fresh chopped cilantro & onions did not help. We did try several different dishes & all were average in flavor.

Overall, it was WAY better than Casa Romas by the outlets...enough that I'd be willing to give them a 2nd try.
