Why not make Sutter Street pedistrian traffic only? Close it off from Riley to Wool or even farther to Decatur? There are barrier devices available that can be raised and lowered electronically/mechanically for emergency vehicles, similar to the barriers in Europe. Only allow delivery of goods in the mornings. The afternoons and evenings would be strickly for pedistrian traffic. Expand the sidewalks in front of the businesses and remove the center traffic divider (keep the trees), while still maintaining the integrity of the historic district.

Because many, if not 50% of businesses, on Sutter Street have no way to get their products into the stores, except by the front door.

I know of a merchant in Old Folsom Town and she is in the Folsom Mercantile. The only way to get her products into the store is through the front door. The stores on that side of the street are backed up to the parking lot in the back of their stores. Go look next time you are there and you'll see their problem. They are located on a cliff!

Many of the merchants try to move products in the off hours of the store, when traffic is less. But sometimes it's not possible, as some have time constraints, not allowing them to move new products in at those times.

I suggested in my post that deliveries be made in the morning when the street could be open to delivery only traffic, then close it at 10am or 11am. I'm sure delivery drivers can walk a half a block with a hand cart in the afternoon if deliveries can't be made in the morning. I'm sure there are other suggestions for deliveries. Just trying to think outside the box.

I like the idea. That's how it's done ini the French Quarter.

The 'pedestrian only' idea was discussed and considered as part of the Historic District revitalization plan. I don't recall the reasoning, but it was decided that for now, the streets and sidewalks would both be widened and trees removed. The trees are sitting in a shallow layer of soil and are unstable.

Funny, the more things change the more they stay the same. I remember in the 50s and 60s when there was diagonal parking on sutter Street (before the tree medians) and everyone went there for the butcher shop, pharmacy, grocery store, gas station. It really was the business center for Folsom.
