Another major accident in Folsom on Folsom Ranch Rd.  Just on the news.  Not many details.  Several taken to the hospital including children.  Appears to be three vehicles.  One flipped on it's top.  Only guessing, but speed looks like a component.  Some of you have better access to get details.

Time to start writing letters to City Council, Mayor, Folsom Police, traffic engineering department, and code enforcement.  Folsom streets are getting as dangerous as a 3rd world country.

This is a terrible toll just in the past week. A reminder to all of us to slow down and drive carefully.

The reports on Folsom Watch (Facebook) were very serious... two kids airlifted.

Another distracted driver?? Guaranteed.

Keep it up, folks. Keep staring at your phone or dealing with your kids while you drive and while you speed. Dummies. You think you're that great of a driver? You think you're bulletproof? Yeah, right.

Pay attention to the road, people.

KCRA update, Saturday 7 23 2016

One thing for sure, if the landscaped median were the same as the Folsom Lake bridge roads  ---     that is,

several inches of yellow paint separating speeding traffic

there probably would have been fatalities.

Note how the tree was sheared off -- and it did slow the speeding red car that flipped.

Council needs to obey the City Muni Code -- by having an independent, and active City Engineer.      All of the city streets are designed to accomplish SPEED --    NOT    SAFETY.

Policemen  and firefighter-paramedics    must be demoralized by all the carnage on Folsom's "wanna-be freeways" with 50 to 55 posted.

Speed is YOUR responsibility. You must go only as fast as is safe, regardless of the posted speed limit. It is not the governments job to assure that YOU drive safely. It is only their job to provide a reasonably safe situation. As 99.99 percent of the traffic seems to drive our roads without issue, it would seem the fault lies not with the design, but with the users.

No argument with this reasoning, Average Joe, but what about the poor unsuspecting people the irresponsible ones take out?  If there is an area that begins having more than its fair share of fatalities because of speed, shouldn't a second look be taken to see if something like installing a median might help protect oncoming traffic?

I would also apply that same logic to cell phones, ducky. With all the carnage on the roads that is attributable to distracted driving, it may be time to force the cell providers to use the technology that they have to disable phones that are in a moving vehicle. The numbers are just too huge to ignore.

I agree...up to a point.  It appears that irresponsibility played a part in this collision.  The driver...and maybe the city too.

If you want to conduct your life in an irresponsible and dangerous way to yourself...okay with me.  Wanna free climb El Capitan without ropes?  Wanna play Russian Roulette with your 9mm?  Wanna swim solo from San Fran to Honolulu?  Be my guest.  If something bad happens, I won't be overflowing with sympathy.

However, if your irresponsible and dangerous actions endanger others around you, there most likely will be legal penalties.  Unfortunately, these aren't imposed until after the fact, when innocents are either injured or dead.  And there's no way to determine if a person will be acting irresponsibly in the future.  The ideas from the film "Minority Report" aren't reality...yet.

In light of all this, it seems appropriate for gov't to take reasonable actions to protect the non-involved, bystanders, and innocents.  If the engineering and urban planning folks are aware of design criteria that afford improved safety to citizens of a community and considered "best practices", and they fail to incorporate those criteria into the urban design, they are negligent IMO.

And here's a little known fact - most government entities have immunities from lawsuits built into their charters.  So if they act in a negligent way that injures you, you have no recourse.  You can only sue a government entity if they agree to allow it.

And then there's the other side of the coin.  When gov't steps in to create laws, codes, and regulations to protect the citizenry from the irresponsible actions of a few, they are accused of creating the "nanny state".

So where's the balance?  No one knows.  The balance point is different for everyone depending on which side is taking money out of your wallet.

No matter what any of us do, we cannot eliminate all risk in our lives.  Common sense goes a long way in reducing it with things like driving at a reasonable speed, knowing how to drive your car, not using your cell phone, not allowing yourself to be distracted by the things happening inside your car, etc.

If we can have red light cameras, how about "phone" cameras that record people on phones in their car and then use that evidence to send tickets.  The state could make a fortune with that.

We already have laws that prohibit the use of phones that aren't "hands-free" while driving.  But on any given day while driving around town, I bet half the drivers I see are holding a freaking phone against their ear.  I'm certain law enforcement sees this too, but chooses to do nothing.  Not sure why.

Couple years back, there were active campaigns by CHP and local law enforcement to stop and ticket drivers that were using phones, but no more.  Apparently, the self-absorbed members of our society have decided that a few auto crashes and highway deaths are an acceptable price for the convenience of texting your FaceBook friends a picture of what you had for breakfast.  I can only hope the victims of these situations (who survive) and/or their families are filing ENORMOUS lawsuits against the perpetrators.

I've already sent emails to the Folsom Chief of Police and to the members of City Council.  What are ALL OF YOU doing to get some kind of action going to reduce these problems??

More news on this collision:

A woman, with her children in the car, was speeding on Folsom Ranch Dr.  She lost control, crossed the median (in the air) and collided (upside down) with a vehicle in the oncoming lanes.  The main cause has been determined to be excessive speed and careless driving.

But there's more to the story...

The woman apparently drives in a reckless manner regularly, usually substantial speeding.  Friends and neighbors have observed it and spoken to her about it.  Her school principal has spoken to her about her recklessness in the school drop-off and pick-up lines.  The principal even threatened to report her to law enforcement.  Apparently this woman has a chronic disregard for her own safety (I have no problem with that), but also the safety of her children and others in the community.  It's hard to know her personal situation, but signs point to other problems in her life.

In my opinion, a permanent ban from occupying the driver seat of any automobile is appropriate for her.  It won't happen, though.

Wow, that is horrible. I wonder if drugs are involved. I feel very sorry for her children.

And a visit from CPS.  Failure to protect is a reason you can loose you children.
